Gonggong was a Chinese water dragon responsible for the chaos of floods, landslides, and the tilt of the Earth in ancient Chinese legends.
According to Wikipedia: “Gonggong is a Chinese water god who is depicted in Chinese mythology and folktales as having a copper human head with an iron forehead, red hair, and the body of a serpent, or sometimes the head and torso are human, with the tail of a serpent. He is destructive and is blamed for various cosmic catastrophes.”
‘Water dragon’ Gonggong is known from the late Warring States period (before 221 BC). Gonggong appears in the ancient "Heavenly Questions" (Tianwen) poem of the Chu Ci, where he is blamed for knocking the earth's axis off center, causing it to tilt to the southeast and the sky to tilt to the northwest. This axial tilt is used to explain why the rivers of China generally flow to the southeast, especially the Yangzi River and the Yellow River, and why the sun, moon, and stars move towards the northwest.

These disasters destroy massive amounts of expensive infrastructure, like homes and businesses, that insurance is then expected to cover. The floods even destroy the ability to make a living off the land, as fertile topsoil, crops, and farm animals are carried off, which then becomes the burden of the insurer and the ultimately the bank, who may want to take their assets back, to mitigate their losses. It’s the kind of damage that begs for government buyback schemes, due to homes built on flood prone plains, such as those that indigenous Aboriginal Australians know as vulnerable to ‘once in a century’ type floods and natural disasters.
How did Gonggong’s narrative come into being? Trans-Neptunian object Gonggong was discovered on 17 July 2007, and during this time Gonggong itself was newly arrived in zodiac water sign Pisces conjunct the North Node in Pisces. On the day there were multiple yods at play, and in the months prior to this date, Haumea in Libra squared Varuna in Cancer making a near exact Hammer of Thor apex on Gonggong, A series of large floods occurred in parts of the United Kingdom during the summer of 2007, due to overly water saturated soils. It was England's wettest June/July on record in what was described as “a summer of suffering”. Civil and military authorities described the June and July rescue efforts as the biggest in peacetime Britain. The Environment Agency described the July floods as critical and expected them to exceed the 1947 benchmark. The July 2007 floods was a wake up call and case study for MORE ROBUST FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT, clarification of roles, more effective communication amongst responsible organisations, better protections for infrastructure, wider public engagement, etc. There were some deaths but homelessness, lack of electricity, drinking water, sanitation etc were a huge problem. Similar floods happened during that time in other countries… Disaster reports from 2007 shows Sri Lanka had massive flash floods in January, in February Jakarta was virtually under water, and Bangladesh saw floods and landslides, and India’s monsoon was particularly troubled by torrential rain, etc.
Every summer the rains fall from the broken sky in north-west China, and create monstrous torrents of water as they ‘fall’ and move through the sometimes narrow river systems towards the south-east, and some years the damage caused is much worse than others, and in different areas. Initially nicknamed “Snow White”, Gonggong was first thought of as an “unremarkable” object despite its large size when discovered, but what initially appeared to be just an innocent white-looking, object, turned out to be a red raging, unpredictable water dragon… Gonggong is the size of Pluto's moon Charon, making it the fifth-largest known trans-Neptunian object (apart possibly from Charon).

In astromythology, Gonggong is the water dragon or demon who is famous for knocking planet Earth off kilter and thus causing the seasons, precession of the equinoxes, and devastating floods. According to ancient text, he and a few others were the mythological rulers of China before the first Xia dynasty. Traditionally they were credited with the foundation of Chinese civilisation and the invention of social, cultural and economic institutions. In Chinese mythology, Gonggong is depicted as having a copper-and-iron, red-haired human head (or sometimes torso) and the body or tail of a serpent. Gonggong was responsible for creating chaos and catastrophe, causing flooding and tilting the Earth, until he was sent into exile. Gonggong is often accompanied by his minister, Xiangliu, a nine-headed poisonous snake monster who was also responsible for causing flooding and destruction, but particularly the disease that would come from the stagnant water, and lack of fresh water, afterwards.
Gonggong was angry that the throne of heaven was handed to Zhaunxu (or fire god Zhurong), who did not care about mortals, and treated fellow gods badly. Thus a rebellion was formed to usurp the throne. After a long battle, Gonggong had to accept defeat, but could not accept his failure. Angry and ashamed Gonggong smashed against Buzhou mountain in rage, but it was though to be one of the pillar supporting the sky in the northwest direction (which happen to be the area where all the rivers start). The sky was left damaged and unsupported. As a result, the sky, together with the sun, the stars and the moon all started to tilt towards the northwest while the land started to tilt towards the southeast. Everything started to fall towards the sea, there was a great flood and people on land suffered greatly. A goddess took pity on the people, and did what reparation she could, but was unable to remedy it completely. Yet, it did enable the local people to continue to live off the land again.
