Pluto was discovered in 1930, around the time the potential for nuclear power in Plutonium was discovered. Even though astronomers were in a desperate search for more planets like Pluto - because they were convinced that they did exist - it was only really in 1992 that the first trans-Neptunian and Kuiper belt object after Pluto and its satelite Charon was found; now called Albion. After that, it was only after the year 2000 that a large number of similar objects were discovered, which eventually prompted the International Astronomical Union to create a ‘dwarf planet’ class. This entailed a breakaway: that Pluto was no longer a regular planet like Saturn, Uranus or Neptune.
Astrologers and many who take an interest in astrology already understand Pluto’s energy well, thus that is not so important in this blog. What is most important, is how Pluto has ‘its fingers’ in many ‘emotional’ pies (it has up to 5 orbiting moons). The largest, Charon, is so big that Pluto and Charon orbit each other like a double planet; it shows the 'in-relation' characteristic that is innately strong with Pluto. It plays a prominent role in Eris’ association with Persephone/Proserpina, and the five direct Eris square Pluto hits from 2020-2021 shows how Pluto digs deep into the energy of the planet that it contacts. In Greek mythology Pluto dances with others and brings either the worse or the best out of them; think of the power dynamics between Pluto, Demeter and Zeus, over Persephone/Proserpina/Kore. Pluto energy is about emotional control of self… and exercising that on others... in healthy or toxic ways.

Pluto is immense power, the great revealer, transformer, and renewer. It is death and rebirth and bring evolution, but when it aspects other TNOs and KBOs, its true magic becomes highly apparent. Pluto also has a very unique relationship with another TNO called Orcus - in a vesica pisces pattern - and is an area where more astrological research is desperately needed. Pluto reveals what is hidden, buried or unseen. It has a quality to not only uncover what is concealed within itself, but is a massive catalyst for change and metamorphosis when paired with other TNOs. Why? Pluto will unearth and unmask fundamental issues - like MORAL QUANDARIES and actions of the like that result in far-reaching consequences - by going down to the roots (or the jugular) of an issue or dynamic. It demands the facing of fears and guilt, confronting the uncomfortable, honouring cycles of life and death and ALLOWING deep change within the atomic structure of each cell in the human body, which is where the divine light for TRANSFORMATION and new potential resides.
Pluto is the first of the trans-Neptunian objects and is about the power and qualities of the tiny atom (like particles, wave forms) and the quantum physics mechanics that changes the nature of reality.
The 2023 movie Oppenheimer is an excellent example of the immense emotional gravity and consequence of Pluto energy, where one man had to come to terms with the chain of events - and MASS DESTRUCTION - that he had set off… that resulted in a scientific minded man who initially had “necessary” rational justification for his actions, looking for solace in the Bhagavad Gita, in deep two-minded regret about what he had participated in. The ideology was to stop a war, yet the ACTIONS OF INFLUENCE TO CHANGE POLICIES/POLITICS started something entirely gruelling - in the form of inescapable emotional weight - for which there were no easy answers, only troublingly complicated and distressing dilemmas and paradoxes.

It’s very much like the consequences of the actions of Hades (Pluto) in Greek mythology, when he opportunistically grabbed, momentarily unprotected maiden Persephone, taking her into the Underworld, which set off a chain of events of sheer terror and fright for her, and a TENSE POLITICAL SITUATION WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT; with his brother Zeus King of the gods and mother-in-law Demeter, that were life threatening, as Demeter/Ceres withheld the harvest of grain from the earth in retaliation, potentially causing STARVATION for mankind if the dispute did not get resolved to her satisfaction.
Likewise, the Trinity test (atomic bomb) set off massive, inhumane repercussions that would force mankind to review its innate capacity to destroy itself, or cultivate its own collective redemption, through inviting discourse. It’s about the central conundrum in the face of potential wipeout, around the bigness and greatness, and also smallness, naiveté and tragedy of a person. It’s about the thinking that one’s ‘innocent’ actions were a force for good, to realise the ridiculous reality in retrospect; that one choice to act had completely spiralled out of control, resulting in bizarre macro and micro consequences. The POWERFUL weapon of mass destruction is a metaphor for both the chess player moves and deliberately brutal actions that one (perhaps control-freak) person take, that are an abuse of power over another living, feeling being(s), who has to live with the immersive consequences that is a demolition or NUKE of sorts for them. The dilemmas are tragic emotionally and morally, yet beautifully human, because it leaves movie-goers with the ability to contemplate how it resonates with their individual experience of ‘Pluto energy’… which is about how an ABUSER who experienced loss of their SENSES, comes to EMPATHY, which is Pluto higher expression.

Producer Christopher Nolan explained that he wanted actor Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer to be empathetic to the audience; to allow them access to his feelings and his thoughts. In the bigger picture, the movie ends with a conversation with Albert Einstein, about men who aspire to be great, who often disregard the greater ramifications of their actions. The atomic bomb is a metaphor for the potential for the kind of destruction innate in both Pluto and Eris energy, as Eris carry astonishing Pluto/8th house/Scorpio themes. In the movie, Strauss takes on the typical role of the antagonist who wanted to defame, destroy and dethrone Oppenheimer, and the spoiler shows the laser beam focus that the envier zeroes in on Oppenheimer; to make his life hell. Strauss’ over-indulgent orchestration shows in wanting to be on the cover of Time magazine; it reveals that Strauss’ vendetta, hubris, arrogance and scheme to turn Oppenheimer’ life in chaos, was for his selfish personal benefit and ego inflation. He is the personification of the Eris villain who wants to be remembered for his impact on the world, who was obsessed with how others viewed him. This spoiler about the movie Oppenheimer shows that it carries both strong Pluto and Eris themes, as Eris and Pluto squares in tight-ish orb at the release of the movie mid July 2023, before separating in 2024. It’s about being a hero of sorts for scientific achievements, the jealousy and envy that is never far behind when great work that result in accolades are involved, and the vilification of the protagonist.
This information in this video shows that Oppenheimer’s life is very much entrenched in Pluto Lower and Higher Expression. Oppenheimer, as a Jew, was very much troubled by the oppression and then war that Hitler started, which made it very personal. He was anti-war, racism and fascism etc., and knew that if Hitler came into such a weapon of destruction, he would use it unsparingly to destroy the world. In Oppenheimer’s fear and justification, this bomb was first thought to be a preventative weapon that could strike fear into the likes of Hitler, and stop the second world war entirely. The making of the atomic bomb was meat to be a pre-emptive action, but this thinking was a naive BETRAYAL, which seem to be a common theme in Oppenheimer’s life. In the forced action of helping or liberating, there was tyranny. After the bombing of Japan, the welfare and the preservation of life came into focus for Oppenheimer, as well as the importance of caring for one’s fellow man, and doing good for the sake of doing good. This fits in perfectly with the Sabian symbol for Pluto in its discovery chart, as it pertains to the nourishment, upliftment and empowerment of another, and what that means for empathic PLUTO HIGHER EXPRESSION. In its own discovery chart, Pluto is conjunct fixed grand star Sirius, yet it is also in tight square to Sedna in Aries, which is about the great polarity of higher expression who is in a good ‘kingly’ space, in a challenge with the lower expression in a very bad EMOTIONALLY TOXIC place inside themselves indeed.
Pluto in psychological astrology is the process of deep self understanding and getting in touch with one’s deepest and most truthful desires, GUILT and EMOTIONAL TRUTH. It’s the situation of looking truthfully at situations, places, people or things that were once serving, but now are toxic. It’s about the attachment that has to be released, and change that has to be allowed. It’s the stripping away of anything that is not true to authentic Self, that doesn’t hold authentic alignment, and doesn’t serve on the life journey. It’s a stripping down to core essence and feeling more empowered to be and express one’s personal truth. Pluto strips down the old life, which then leaves room for the new to ignite and regenerate. Eris and Pluto energy share many similarities, which is why astrologers are often confused about differentiating between them.
Pluto is about our internal authority and an internal sense of power versus an externally imposed power. Pluto is the detective or the spy that sees deep into matters. In history, Pluto transits are quite visible in social trends. When Pluto was in Sagittarius, bold colourful colours and makeup, big hairdo’s were common and people made bold moves to spend money on the stock market. With Pluto moving into Aquarius, expect for technology and forward thinking to change the human species in unexpected ways, especially as Pluto starts to settle in this futuristic, individualistic but social sign from 2025 forward.
Pluto made five direct hits to Eris in 2020 - 2021 with an orb of influence stretching into 2024. Pluto will be in close square with Haumea from 2020 beyond 2030, and make a Hammer of Thor aspect pattern on various planets that transit second decan Gemini.
