Pluto, Lord of the Underworld Discovery Chart and Uncovering Higher Expression

There has never been such a potent time to study Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, and understand Persephone’s journey into the Underworld, as Russia fight for power over Ukraine, and has tremendous nuclear capability, and needing to temper themselves. A reckless move is going to cost many… This is the most perfect time to write about Pluto - for the first time exclusively on the Pluto blog - as six planets are retrograde, and as we are counting down the days to the Venus Sun superior conjunction in Libra, when the Sun eclipses

both Venus and Haumea on 22-23 October, sending two predominantly feminine energies into Pluto’s Underworld. This entails a disconnection from the two benevolent energies. What might this journey mean for humanity and the challenge to respect, value and be in harmony with others on this planet? Then on the 25 October, the Moon eclipses the Sun during a partial Solar eclipse, with Venus still in tight conjunction right behind the Sun at 2 degrees Scorpio, still eclipsing Venus’ energy from planet Earth. However this manifests, it’s going to be epic.

There are other articles on this website that discusses the upcoming Underworld journey in October 2022 in detail, like this one and this one. There is also another article that focusses on Persephone’s Underworld experience, and how that relates to Eris, Greek Goddess of Discord and Strife.

Yet this first blog post in the Pluto blog, is dedicated to Pluto, and understanding the higher expressions, from the discovery chart point of view. This is a highly unusual article… but then Pluto is a highly Aquarian individual…

Pluto was discovered in 1930, around the time the potential for nuclear power in Plutonium was discovered. Even though astronomers were in a desperate search for more planets like Pluto - because they were convinced that they did exist - it was only really in 1992 that the second trans-Neptunian object after Pluto and its satelite Charon was found; now called Albion. After that, it was only after the year 2000 that a large number of similar objects were discovered, which eventually prompted the International Astronomical Union to create a ‘dwarf planet’ class. This meant that Pluto was no longer a regular planet like Saturn, Uranus or Neptune.

Astrologers and many who take an interest in astrology already understand Pluto’s energy well. Therefore, we will not explore much of what is already known. We want to examine new information on Pluto… without being in denial of the lower expressions.

What is most important, is how Pluto has its fingers in many pies (read relationships). It has up to five known orbiting moons.

The largest, Charon, is so big that Pluto and Charon orbit each other like a double planet; it shows the 'in-relation' characteristic that is innately strong with Pluto, as well as many other trans-Neptunian objects.

Pluto plays a prominent role in Eris’s association with Persephone, and the five direct Eris square Pluto hits from 2020-2021 shows how Pluto digs deep into the energy of the planets that it contacts. Pluto dances with others and brings either the worse or the best out of them; think of the power dynamics between Pluto and Ceres/Demeter in Greek mythology, over Persephone/Proserpina/Kore.

This is not really a violent chart, which is perhaps surprising since Pluto is often accused of being ruthless and power hungry. Nature can be violent, but it is not wilfully cruel. Pluto just wants to evolve in the way of natural law. It is primal, raw and puts on no airs and graces.

Pluto will be in close square with Haumea from 2020 beyond 2030, and it will stay in trine aspect with Sedna from 2022 - 2028. Since the start of 2020, Pluto’s influence has been immense, as many of the outer planets and some TNOs move in or around the 29th degrees of their respective signs, aspecting each other. Click on the images to enlarge.

Pluto is immense power, the great revealer, transformer, and renewer. It is death and rebirth and brings soul evolution, but when it aspects other TNOs and KBOs, it’s true magic and alchemical potential become apparent. Pluto’s buried treasure, is treasure worth digging for...

Pluto also has a very unique relationship with another trans-Neptunian object called Orcus - in a vesica pisces pattern - and is an area where more astrological research is desperately needed. Pluto reveals what is hidden, buried or unseen. It has a quality to not only uncover what is concealed within itself, but is a massive catalyst for change and metamorphosis when paired with other TNOs. Why? Pluto will unearth and unmask fundamental issues, by going down to the roots (or the jugular) of an issue or dynamic. Pluto is involved in the transformation of energy without flinching; becoming a master alchemist when paired up with the other TNOs. On its own, Pluto is a powerful agent of change, but paired with the other TNOs, it’s dynamite. Pluto is the detective or the spy that sees deep into matters. If you have someone in your life with a strong Pluto, you will know about their ability to see deeply; truth.

According to Wikipedia, Hades was the name first given to this character. The origin of Hades' name is uncertain, but has generally been seen as meaning "the unseen one" or the rich one since antiquity. Perhaps from fear of pronouncing his name, around the 5th century BC, the Greeks started referring to Hades as Plouton, with a root meaning "wealthy", considering that from the abode below (i.e., the soil) come riches (e.g., fertile crops, metals and so on). Plouton became the Roman god who both rules the underworld and distributed riches from below. Pluto was seen as “the giver of wealth” and the hidden wealth of the earth; from the fertile soil with nourished the seed-grain, to the mined wealth of gold, silver and other metals.

Despite modern connotations of death as evil, Hades was actually more altruistically inclined in mythology.

Hades was portrayed as passive and never portrayed negatively; his role was often maintaining relative balance.

That said, he was also depicted as cold and stern, and he held all of his subjects equally accountable to his laws. Any other individual aspects of his personality are not given, as Greeks refrained from giving him much thought to avoid attracting his attention. Hades ruled the dead, assisted by others over whom he had complete authority. The House of Hades was described as full of "guests," though he rarely left the underworld. He cared little about what happened in the world above, as his primary attention was ensuring none of his subjects ever left his domain.

Sabian Symbol

18 Cancer - A hen scratching for chicks.

Pluto in its own discovery chart is at 17 degrees Cancer.

The Sabian symbol for Pluto is so beautiful and authentic, when it comes to the higher expression of Pluto.

When Pluto’s most significant relationship, and how Persephone became Queen of the Underworld is studied in depth, this become apparent. This symbol conveys how to uncover what is needed, for survival and the ability to thrive, allowing oneself to be transformed, to even thrive in otherwise challenging situations. Pluto, just like Eris is a highly challenging energy to understand and work with masterfully, yet when the deeper dynamics are studied and understood, it is truely magical. The mother hen teaches the offspring how to provide for themselves. She set them up, not for failure, but the ability to find their own satisfaction and nourishment - to sustain themselves - in good time. In Pluto’s relationship with Persephone (higher expression Eris), we see her having experiences that are visceral and frightening for her on a deep level, but with the support of her husband Pluto - who had been struck by Cupid’s arrow (so beautifully portrayed by the Venus in Pisces) - shows that in good time she learns to allow the deep fear and fright to be in the body - without resistance - eventually rising into her maturity (the journey of Venus into the Underworld), to rise as the Queen of a frightful place, having mastered her experience.

Higher expression Pluto allows and facilitates soul evolution and maturation.

Despite being the wife of Pluto, his influence in her life allowed Persephone to break away from her mother’s overprotective and smothering influence, to enable her to come into her own power and independence. Pluto didn’t lord it over her, Persephone and Pluto were equals as rulers of the Underworld. Persephone having found her own inner nourishment and empowerment, was a massive improvement in her life, that led to her growth as a person, into a highly confident, stable and unshakable woman. With Pluto’s help, she might never own her emotional truth, have grown up, and taken responsibility for her own destiny, instead still being under her mothers unhealthy ‘looking after’. Ceres/Demeter was a great mother and nurturer, but in the lower expression extreme, she smothered the life out of Persephone. Under Pluto’s influence in the Underworld, Persephone learned to look within when she was frightened. By facing her fears, she overcame to fulfil an important role in community with others, that needed great emotional and intellectual maturity.

Persephone developed into her full expressions as Queen of the Underworld for six months of the year, then underwent a massive transformation by being detoxified and reborn as Goddess of Spring and Renewal, when she returns to her mother for the other half of the year.

When you understand Pluto higher expression, and the relationship dynamics in his life, you can begin to understand how beautiful Pluto transits can be for the conscious individual. Also, how incredibly powerful it is when Pluto makes aspects with other trans-Neptunian objects, like when Eris squared Pluto five direct hits in 2020-2021, and how Pluto is trine Sedna, and square Haumea. This is potent…

Also of interest, NASA’s New Horizons discovered a massive HEART shaped area on the surface of Pluto….

pomegranate that Persephone ate in the underworld, and ultimately

The sabian symbol of 18 degrees Cancer illustrates a mother hen who scratches in the ground, as wise instruction for her chicks to learn how to have their own needs met. As Pluto is “the giver of wealth” and associated with fertile soil, so the hen shows her chickens how to obtain a plentiful supply from the riches of the soil for themselves, and their future offspring. Her industrious action comes with the intention to eventually enable for her students to overcome challenges, and to find their own NOURISHMENT, sustenance and abundance with greater success. Hens are known for their STRONG MATERNAL INSTINCT, and will even nurture and give warmth to other animal species, like puppies or kittens. Pluto has the same dedicated commitment to this goal as the hen, to support and to teach the student skills: the discernment between what is truely meaningful and virtuous to excel in, and what is perhaps entirely meaningless to partake in. Pluto sees with a clarity and wipes the slate clean for a new, fruitful beginning, that will be to our advantage, even if it frightens us when we are suddenly thrown into an experience in the Underworld, that may be downright frightening. Yet we learn to provide for ourselves, and when we become mature, we may provide for others what they need, based on our own life experience and education.

Fulfilment comes from pursuing the right path persistently.
— JamesBurgess.com on Sabian Symbol 18 Cancer

The hen in its natural habitat is a provider and an enabler, and likewise, Pluto didn’t leave his partner to her own devices, he helped her by negotiating the relationships between her and Ceres/Demeter, and also the influence that Zeus (ruler of Olympus) was trying to have after Ceres/Demeter withheld fertility from the earth, and petitioned Zeus for the return of her stolen child. Pluto - on his own unique terms - helped Persephone to find her own sovereignty and majesty, as an independent, mature, authentic and wise woman he can be proud of; a deserving partner to rule the Underworld with him. No longer a maiden or an innocent, but seeing and understanding unhealthy relationship dynamics, and not partaking in foolishness, deception, or bullshit. Indulging in Self-love, wisdom, and self-nourishment instead. Read the story of Persephone/Eris and the relationship with Ceres/Demeter and Pluto, if you cannot comprehend how this can be true.

Hens awaken the innate knowing of surviving in her chicks, and hardwires them through the nurturing environment to learn, develop and grow. In the underworld, this is what Pluto enables Persephone to do, allowing Persephone in her Underworld journey to re-evaluate her emotional truth, and her relationships with everyone (her mother, her new husband and with her Self), and carve a new path that is in her best interest for moving forward in life; in a successful, independent, and abundant manner.

What does Pluto’s Discovery Chart reveal about him?

This will not be an in depth, nor exhaustive look, but a skimming over the top of prominent qualities in the chart. Pluto’s discovery chart has multiple themes concerning a person who does not put up airs and graces.

Aquarius Personal Planets

Pluto’s Sun is in the crisis degree of 29 Aquarius, which entail extreme eccentricity and a challenge with not fitting in. He and Zeus simply could not rule over the same realms, which is why Pluto is the lord of the Underworld, where he has dominion, control and power, and Zeus can do little about it. Note how the Sun makes a square with Jupiter, and an opposition with Neptune. Neptune took dominion over the ocean, because like Pluto, they could not co-rule with Zeus (Jupiter). Mythology details this story, which will not be repeated here. Also note how Ceres at 7 degrees Gemini conjuncts Jupiter, which reiterates the mythological story of how Ceres/Demeter petitioned Zeus for Persephone’s return, which was in conflict (square) to Pluto’s sun, and his own aspirations to keep her to himself in the underworld.

Mercury and Mars conjunct, both at 9 degrees Aquarius. This conjunction is at the bendings, with the North Node at 6 degrees Taurus, adding further importance to the fact that Pluto did as he pleased, and he was perhaps not always understood by his brethren. With these many personal planets in the sign of being authentic, and truthful to self, Pluto simply had no reason to put up airs.

See the Greek trinity and the distribution of kingdoms to the right: Zeus (Jupiter), Poseidon (Neptune) and Hades (Pluto), gods of heavens, sea, and underworld.

Venus in Pisces

Venus in Pisces shows Pluto’s higher expression underbelly. He did have appreciation for beauty, which is why when Cupid’s arrow took hold, he fell instantly in love with maiden Persephone. With Venus in tight opposition to Neptune in Virgo, both at 2 degrees, this shows an emphasis on Pluto’s acute awareness of those who carry an ethereal beauty, innocence, virginity and youthfulness. Those who are yet untouched by the evils of life, and need protection from those who may want to take advantage of them. This may either stir the higher expression desire to protect and help, or the lower expressions to abuse a position of power over, that astrologers are so familiar with…

Moon in Scorpio

The Moon is at 13 degrees Scorpio conjunct the South Node at 6 degrees. The south node represents a person’s comfort zone, and where in life they may be too stagnant. In Scorpio, this is very obvious of the lower expression of Pluto, which entails staying stuck in unforgiveness, instability, emotional turmoil, addictions, substance abuse, revenge, abuse of power, retribution, and the toxicity of low vibrational emotions. This is one of the places in the discovery chart that shows the potential for moving out of dark energy, transformation and renewal. Evolving and growing out of the comfort zone, into transformation and the new potential for stability in North Node Taurus. The zodiac sign of Scorpio sees through the bullshit and the shenanigans, deep into the truth, which is another signature of someone who is serious minded, and don’t put up airs.

Yod with Neptune at the Apex

Neptune represents denial, repression of the truth, confusion or not seeing things clearly. Uranus in Aries trines the Mercury/Mars conjunction in Aquarius and makes a Yod apex out of Neptune in Virgo. This shows the doggedness with which Pluto treats untruth and denial of truth. The Yod’s energy is representative of using a sword to cut through the bullshit, into utter clarity. Just like Neptune, Pluto also have a deep connection to the occult and spirituality, and probing into these matters; to bring out the best from them. This Yod is representative of Pluto’s deep, probing psychic surgery en masse; it’s the force to take on the positive qualities of the apex planet Neptune, and get out of denial.

Saturn in Capricorn

Saturn is in it’s sign of rulership at 8 degrees Capricorn, which is one of the signatures of why Pluto is such a powerful, commanding and authoritative personality. Saturn also squares Uranus at 9 degrees Aries, making this a powerful aspect. Note how the chart makes many aspects that are around the same degrees. This is a strong signature of a powerful serious-minded person, that can also be open-minded, that has his fingers in many pies…

Chiron in Taurus

Chiron in Taurus is an eloquent expression for Pluto’s wounding, which entailed instability and emotional instability amplified by it being conjunct the North Node in Taurus. It is very obvious how instability, too much intensity, and emotional instability is part of Pluto lower expression, therefore little will be said about this.

Pluto in Cancer

Pluto in Cancer and Moon in Scorpio is in mutual reception, which means emotional relationship (maternal instinct?) is potent, powerful and amplified in Pluto’s higher expression. Pluto in Cancer also trines Moon in Cancer, which is a beneficial aspect. They are both in Water signs, showing the importance and focus on DEEP emotions, control and power. This is another signature of someone who do not have airs and graces; who values emotional honesty, integrity and truth. This is the signature of utter EMOTIONAL TRUTH AND HONESTY, that Pluto transits demand, for change, release of the old, and allowing of new life. We can also see how Pluto lower expression comes into being: when the emotional waters get muddied by stuck, stagnant, toxic emotions, like greed, desire for revenge etc.

A lot revolves around Pluto… and The Underworld…

Pluto has his fingers in many pies (read relationships), and he overseas everything in his domain; that people learn to look at what had been previously ‘hidden’ or in their blindspot. Or perhaps they had been in denial over something, refusing to be witness to the truth. The Underworld are about the ‘things’ that we are not yet aware of, or in darkness about, or have yet to look at. When these issues come to light, they can be alchemised for a powerful beginning. When ignored, they become our enemies, our stagnation in karmic cycles, and our prison guards. Pluto people are powerful and influential, and so is the ‘digging up of the rot’ quality of Pluto. Pluto was seen as “the rich one”, but why would he be rich?

Note in the image above, that Pluto and Persephone sit with torches beside them. On ancient Greek vases, Persephone is also depicted as either holding a torch, a flaming torch, or someone next to her holding a torch next to her. The torch is a symbol of liberty, freedom, inspiration, knowledge, teaching, illumination and enlightenment. The symbol of a torch holds the very essence of life, spirit, and the power to overcome any challenge that gets in the way of your endeavours, or pursuits. Pluto looks deeply into truth, and Persephone’s stay there, also forced her to look at truths. There is a fundamentally enriching quality in the lives of those who look within for valuable truths, to avoid the karmic cycles, with karmic partners, and live life learning one’s lessons; living in truth instead of denial.

No more illusions, nor unnecessary obsessions, clearing the path towards abundance, by sacrificing, forgiving, and releasing.

Feeling whole, having wiped the slate clean for the gift of peace and sitting regal in one’s thrown, in dignity.

According to Wikipedia, to Plato, the god of the underworld was "an agent in beneficent cycle of death and rebirth" meriting worship under the name of Plouton, a giver of spiritual wealth.

“In the dialogue Cratylus, Plato has Socrates explain the etymology of Plouton, saying that Pluto gives wealth (ploutos), and his name means "giver of wealth, which comes out of the earth beneath". Because the name Hades is taken to mean "the invisible", people fear what they cannot see; although they are in error about the nature of this deity's power, Socrates says, "the office and name of the God really correspond": He is the perfect and accomplished Sophist, and the great benefactor of the inhabitants of the other world; and even to us who are upon earth he sends from below exceeding blessings. For he has much more than he wants down there; wherefore he is called Pluto (or the rich).”

A Sophist was a teacher in ancient Greece in the fifth and fourth centuries BC. Sophists specialised in one or more subject areas, such as philosophy, rhetoric, music, athletics (physical culture), and mathematics. They taught virtue, excellence and wisdom. The word σοφός gives rise to the verb σοφίζω (sophizo), which means "to instruct" or "make learned", and the passive voice of which means "to become or be wise", or "to be clever or skilled".

This pinax above portrays Persephone with a rooster and a bundle of ears of corn, and Hades with a ritual cup and a flowering branch. The ears of corn evoke the connection between Persephone and her mother Demeter who, in Greek mythology, presided over agriculture and the cultivation of cereals. Pluto is associated with his Cerberus (the three headed hound), sceptre, cornucopia. He was depicted as a dark-bearded, regal god either enthroned in the underworld and holding a sceptre, or pouring fertility from a cornucopia.

Image: This discovery image, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows five moons orbiting the distant, icy dwarf planet Pluto. The darker stripe in the centre of the image is because the picture is constructed from a long exposure designed to capture the comparatively faint satellites of Nix, Hydra, Kerberos and Styx, and a shorter exposure to capture Pluto and Charon, which are much brighter. Kerberos has an estimated diameter of 13 to 34 kilometres, and Styx is thought to be irregular in shape and 10 to 25 kilometres across. via Wikimedia Commons.

Another article shows the dynamics that lead up to Persephone’s visit to the Underworld, to re-evaluate all her relationships in the Venus in the Underworld experience. In Eris’s discovery chart, we also see a Scorpio Moon at 10 degrees. This enmeshes with the theme of Persephone being in a personal struggle with overly intense love/hate relationships. First, her mother loves her deeply, ardently protects and nurtures her. At first, her mother Ceres/Demeter embodies all the positive qualities of the archetype, but when this ‘love’ turns ‘sour’ - in the negative - Ceres/Demeter smothers her daughter in unhealthy ‘love-hate’ relationship dynamics. The same karmic pattern then repeats when Pluto snatches her away from her life while she was picking the narcissus flower. Struck by Cupid’s arrow, Pluto is said to be blinded by his ‘love’ for her, but it soon becomes apparent - in the negative expression - that Pluto’s ‘love’ is selfish and self-serving, as he fights with others to keep Persephone by his side, not willing to share her with her mother, nor

give in to Zeus’s request that she be returned to Ceres/Demeter.

This is the ‘karmic flood’ with antagonistic deranged karmic partners, who claim to love her, but not have her best interest at heart. What kind of love is that?

When it is - in truth - utterly self-serving and toxic to the recipient of that so-called ‘love’. Is that even ‘love’ or relationship worth having? This is what is being re-evaluated as Venus/Persephone is in the Underworld. Pondering and re-evaluating on the deranged negative expression behaviours of those who ‘claim’ to love her, but between higher and lower expression behaviours, do they really have her best interest at heart?

Image: Roman statue of the goddess Persephone (also known as Proserpina). The restoration of the statue has her holding a theatre mask, like one of the Muses. c. 140-160 CE. (National Archaeological Museum of Naples) via Wikimedia Commons.

Lover and enemy lines are crossed and blurred often, which are themes innate in both Pluto and Eris’s mythologies, and many of the TNOs.

In the midst of the fighting over her, Persephone saw in fright, that both her mother and Pluto were in unhealthy co-dependence on her, and wanted her to be disadvantaged, take some kind of loss, in relation. Her mother wanted to control her, and Pluto tricked her into eating a pomegranate seed, so she would stay…

Persephone learned about the selfish entrapment that those who love, or claim to love her can fall into - in the negative expression - and she took action to guard herself, while still being ‘in relation’.

Empathic individuals like Persephone often see the potential in others, but often those people do not live up to that potential, especially when they put up fake facades (see the image of Persephone holding a theatre mask, signifying the Eris connection).

It takes a wise, mature, graceful, and seasoned person to see through the fakery, and into the true motivations and ill intentions.

This article has put an overwhelming focus on the rarely explored higher expression of Pluto, yet the higher expression of a planet, is intricately tied to the polarity of it; the lower expression.

To deny the one, is to deny the other.

This is the lesson that Pluto brought into the human consciousness when he was discovered in 1930. Pluto ushered in the energy that would become highly prominent in the trans-Neptunian and Kuiper belt objects.

Polarity.

Dark and light.

Masculine and feminine energies.

The stark darkness of denial and distortion of truth, versus enlightenment, maturity, fertility, and unshakable stability.

Pluto and Eris’s discovery charts show the potential for the negative expressions of both, to become very dark and deranged. This is deeply explored in other articles, but not this one. Both Pluto and Eris have delightful higher expressions, that may be reached, when one is willing to be the alchemist of one’s own life.

Persephone ultimately showed the immense benefit of balancing out both one’s divine feminine and divine masculine energies; in one person, and getting out of denial, can bring a tremendous blessing of fertility, and create stability for an individual, who are thrown into challenging circumstances. The pomegranate that Persephone ate in the underworld, and ultimately

ensured her attachment to it, is a symbol of life, fertility, power and eternal life; it’s not meant to be a punishment, nor a death sentence. Persephone recognised the importance of not making others the judge or authority over her life; bringing her own justice about by taking accountability and responsibility for her life, as a sovereign being. Persephone had the willingness and discipline to allow the learning of valuable life lessons. A Venus in the Underworld experience entails a time of being separated and isolated from others, in order to elevate. Therefore trust this time period in your life, however long this may be for you, and allow the quantum leaping, into a new state of being.
