Haumea Discovery Chart Goddess of Birth, Creation and Fertility in Hawaiian Mythology Part 2

Haumea is the goddess of fertility, ancestral knowledge, politics, government, war, and childbirth in Hawaiian mythology. Haumea became the Akua wahine (divine feminine).

This article is part 2 about the discovery chart of newly discovered dwarf planet Haumea in astrology. For part 1 click here.

Please remember that this article may be more suitable for the more advanced astrology student, as basic concepts are not explained here.

Due to the new classification for Kuiper Belt Objects done after the discovery of MakeMake, the Kuiper Belt Objects are now on par with Pluto, and we know Pluto has a very, very powerful, underworld, plutonium, atomic energy. See this list of brightest Kuiper Belt Objects, as well as astronomer Mike Brown’s list of dwarf planets.

The Kuiper Belt objects bring hope, change, expanded thinking, soul purpose, and quantum leaps into our consciousness.

Haumea will be a huge influence in the seven year Yod that will be in the astrological sky from 2022 - 2028.

There is a new online course about the trans-Neptunian and Kuiper Belt Objects involved in the strange mixed bag of energies we've been having since the start of 2020, with some stretching beyond 2030.

  • The Gonggong Yod is all about the massive chaos caused by floods, too much rain and landslides.

  • The Sedna Yod is about the respect for people, animals and the natural world being violated, and how the natural world can come back to bite. When the WHO announced a global health emergency on 31 January 2020, Haumea in Libra was sextile to Ixion in Sagittarius making a Yod apex on Sedna and malefic fixed star Algol.

  • The Varuna Yod is about sacred law and order, justice and truth in the cosmos that needs to return.

  • The Haumea Yod is about the wild abundance and providence of nature that can be created when appropriate governmental structures support benevolence for all.

  • The MakeMake square Quaoar aspect is about is about the smite that the Hammer of Thor apex makes in Taurus smiting things Taurus, perhaps into oblivion. Curiously, both this Hammer apex and the Sedna Yod makes apexes in Taurus, which is the sign of the bull. Together they are creating massive upset and change in agriculture, the natural world, earth matters, and with cattle; with the recent threat of foot and mouth disease in Australia a great example of the manifestation of this energy.

The Feminine Source of Creativity, Creation, Birth and Fertility

Eventually some do go within, to realise why something was not working…

It was in the discipline and preparation of doing the grounding work for rituals, that traditional Hawaiians were able to find the key. By going within into the heart space, and the core of their being, to retrieve the knowledge, wisdom, mental and emotional calm to resolve social disputes (third house) and forgive each other. Through ceremonies and the meditative state they struck gold, and get rid of the fogginess. You simply cannot carry grudges against another on such a confined landmass. And you can’t just run your mouth in slander or brawl to prove you are always right (Mercury and Mars in Sagittarius, a fire sign) when you are angry with another, for the consequences of that hot-headed impulsiveness will be great.

Hawaii is the heart chakra of the planet, and anyone who has ever made the effort to ground themselves, move into, and live from their heart space for extended periods of time, will know that it feels glorious. It is a vast, spacious, timeless, fertile, creative and healing place of magic. It is who we really are…

It is from the heart space that an individual can create abundantly, and birth the new with ease, not from the mind…

I believe this shows the difference between higher expression Haumea, and the lower expression…

It is from this higher state of being, that Hawaiians can live in peace with one another, on their small islands, that has certain challenges, as the heat in the blood rise... Both men and women can tap into this benevolent energy. It is deeply feminine, but it is not gender specific, as is reiterated in the mythology that Haumea perpetuates herself in both her female and male descendants.

Ho'oponopono Heart Healing

The Hawaiian word ho'oponopono comes from ho'o ("to make") and pono ("right").

And in a society started by an ancestress with a birth chart that is decidedly Sagittarian, being always right, fiery and perhaps too dogmatic at times, it is not hard to see why relationships need to be mended, and made “right” at times, as part of small island living.

The repetition of the word pono means "doubly right" or being right with both self and others. How synchronous?

In a nutshell, ho'oponopono is a process by which we can forgive others to whom we are connected “in relation”. It roughly translates to “cause things to move back in balance”. It's a very zen concept. This ancient Hawaiian practice of forgiveness functions as both a communication concept for reconciliation (Mercury) and a tool for restoring self-love and balance (Venus). Some believe that chanting this prayer over and over like a mantra, while sitting with your eyes closed in meditation, is a powerful way to cleanse the body of guilt, shame, haunting memories, ill will, or bad feelings that keep the mind fixated on negative thoughts (Mercury in Sagittarius, in third house). Historically, the ho’oponopono prayer was a kind of shared reconciliation mantra for divided families, also known as Ohana. The ho’oponopono prayer goes like this:

“I’m sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you.”

The simple phrases helps develop self-love and self-esteem, like a lulaby and an insightful approach to forgive those who (the Sagittarian negative expression) we perceive to have hurt us.

According to this website, "part of the reason why this traditional Hawaiian forgiveness prayer is so powerful is that it first requires you to acknowledge that wrong was done by saying you’re sorry. Having other people acknowledge our feelings is a universal need; in ho’oponopono, you must first acknowledge that wrongdoing exists, which is a way of acknowledging these feelings. Only then will it be possible to find it in your heart to forgive someone else, or yourself. In the final step, you acknowledge love– both for yourself, and others. Most people, when attempting to forgive either others or themselves, make the mistake of thinking that forgiveness = total absolution, or an erasing of the wrongdoing. This is ultimately futile because it ignores hurt feelings, which inevitably bubble back up later if they are not addressed."

Ho’oponopono allows all parties to sit with and hold space for these feelings.

First, we acknowledge that the problem exists. Then, when we are ready, we make the conscious choice to move on. True forgiveness, moreover, requires both attention and intention. When done correctly, it is one of the most freeing sensations there is– like an invisible weight has been lifted.

Video: In a world undergoing immense hardship, we may only find reconciliation through, first...forgiveness. Kumu Sabra Kauka, Hawai'ian Historian, Educator & Activist speaks about the Hawai'ian tradition of Ho'oponopono, a communication concept/tool/ceremony for restoring balance. Ho'oponopono is a wisdom teaching that has gained popularity amongst travelers of all backgrounds who come to Hawai'i, as it may be implemented by all to resolve conflict, heal heavy hearts, and perhaps even transform relationships that are undergoing challenge...on an interpersonal, community-wide, family or spiritual level. It is our prayer that we humans can share ho'oponopono to heal our wounds and restore balance to our people, so we can show up in full service to our planet in this time of great need for change. Video by Wisdom Weavers of the World.

This process is part of that alchemy and restoration (Pluto at the IC).

Looking at those deep issues, purging them, and releasing them successfully, for the heart and the relation to be healthy and joyful again.

To weave wisdom, so that more people can enjoy the abundance of that heart space, and live in symbiotic harmony, as best as possible.

Even the holy bible teaches us that confession and repentance for wrongdoing is an important stage in forgiving those who hurt us. But so often in the modern world, people don’t heed these practices, and many people have to work their way to forgiveness, without having equal participation from both parties. It is so much easier to seperate, move away and never speak again. Not providing for the kind of closure of the ho'oponopono practice.

Aloha - The Divine Breath of Life

Aloha meant more to traditional Hawaiians than simply a greeting of hello or goodbye.

According to this website, Aloha in Hawaiian culture is an essence of being: love, peace, compassion, fellowship and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness. When greeting another person with aloha, there is mutual regard and affection. This extends with warmth in caring for the other with no obligation to receive anything in return. The direct translation from Hawaiian to English is the presence of divine breath. The Hawaiian word alo is presence, front and face, and ha is breath.

The Spirit of Aloha is:

Akahi- kindness to be expressed with tenderness

Lokahi- unity to be expressed with harmony

Oluolu- agreeable to be expressed with pleasantness

Haahaa- humility to be expressed with modesty

Ahonui- patience to be expressed with perseverance

“Aloha is the true meaning and symbol of the Hawaiian culture and lifestyle: respect and love one another, and live in harmony with everything around you. Aloha is not something that is spoken, it is something that must be experienced.”

“A traditional Hawaiian greeting starts by sharing ha, or their breath. The exchange of breath is done when two individuals press their foreheads and noses together while inhaling at the same time. This exchange is a significant part of Hawaiian culture. Hawaiians recognised that the breath is key to good health and believed it possesses mana or spiritual power. Exchanging ha is a practice that rarely happens anymore, however, those connected with Hawaiian culture and heritage will often greet each other in this fashion. This breath exchange relates to aloha because the sharing of the breath is a sign of respect, of allowing another person in close to you, essentially the essence of aloha.”

Traditional Hawaiians were grounded, and their breath came from deep inside, with the diaphragm doing what it was intended to do. It was a source of constant replenishment, that nourished the physical body with life energy. Mana was the spiritual energy and aloha was the love.

They breathed the sacred breath of the cosmos with deep trust. Surrendering to the alchemy of life. Not like modern day city folk, who breathe very shallow, and tend to be ungrounded, and too much in their heads…

Elimination, Detoxification, Purification of Ecology

Haumea’s mythology according to Martha Beckwith’s book, has stories about water; some ponds are pure and fresh, and others needed cleaning. I find this is symbolic of many of nature’s systems, and the destructive and regenerative mana (life energy).

When you forgive other people who had hurt you, the body lets go of the held toxicity and stagnancy (Pluto) relating to negative heart issues in relation (Venus), being forceful (Mars) and hurtful words (Mercury) (see list at bottom)…

This release allows potential for renewal, natural flow and purity of heart.

Like the human lymphatic system, which is designed to eliminate toxins, refining our life force and vibrancy. Being able to purify and detoxify the body efficiently, makes one subject to less degeneration and effects of old age. Therefore the fertility lies in all natural systems; the earth, the soil microbes, the plants that produce food, the people, and the quality of the spring water. Haumea is about the regeneration of the earth, the soil, the ocean, the human body etc. It is not hard to see when a natural environment is pristine. Nor when someone is in excellent physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health: they glow and they are vibrant, from the inside out… magical…

This vibrancy in highly empathic individuals may be mistaken for being naive, and some take this kindness as weakness. But it is their strength. Even those who have gone through the horrors of life - had been betrayed or exploited - are able to redeem themselves, and become like children again; innocent, loving and sweet. There are many published autobiographies showing that even after the worst of disasters, people can reclaim themselves, and enjoy abundance like they have never experienced before.

Instant Release and Synchronous Magic

It may seem bizarre, how magical life can suddenly be, when one person is able to completely drop the emotional burdens and toxicity, in a moment of turnaround. By a seeming wave of a magical wand, life force energy suddenly reciprocates, with gifts and blessing seemingly pouring from the sky. Out of the blue, life suddenly blesses that person and bestows an easy flow, when they free their Self up from certain toxic energies behaviours, thinking, negativity or stressful situations.

When a person finally stops wasting energy, time or focus on the things that may have dragged them down, they become lighter and freer to accept the greater, better things of life. Dropping burdens, to pick up blessings. It is truely crazy how fast life can bless you with astonishing abundance, when you truely let go in an instant… Finally freeing up your energy, for the new… Huge shifts and changes may suddenly occur both internally and externally, as life arranges goodness and miracles manifest…

The Metaphysical, Spiritual Birth, Blossoming Abundance and Quantum Creativity

Haumea is the deity, the goddess of childbirth with supernatural powers. Author Martha Beckwith suggests that the name Haumea actually comes from Hanaumea, which means “sacred birth.” When something is being born, it includes pangs, stresses and pains associated with an act of creativity. Its the transition from one state, into another. Haumea assists in bringing forth what is fresh or new, and facilitates its emergence. Learning the lessons that includes releasing the baggage and conflict.

In astrology, Haumea represents the ability to give birth in a special way – in essence - the ability to produce a pure, new state of consciousness.

The purity element in astrology is derived from the fact that Haumea is made up of smooth pure rock and pure ice – unadulterated, fundamental elements in a fast spinning state of equilibrium. The “birthing” aspect is derived not only from Haumea herself, but also due to the egg-shape of the planet.

Haumea is also associated with the ability to birth soul awareness of an unadulterated nature. It is the incarnation of souls over many lifetimes and through this, represents the continuance of the soul, as well as the ability to maintain awareness of one’s soul nature from lifetime to lifetime. Haumea teaches a wholistic view of life – integrating biological and ecological awareness with the sacredness of life. And an attunement to embracing our sojourn on earth with the awareness of being an evolving soul, having a human experience. In this way she represents a re-birth in consciousness for humanity, which supports greater spiritual awareness about the fundamental primordial forces of life.

Childbirth not only represents birthing physical children, but also the ease with which heart-connected people can be highly creative, and give birth to their abundant creations, which in turn, makes heart-disconnected people get jealous and envious of their talents and their good energy. This is what the energetic fighting, chaos and bullshit in relation is all about…

Why? The arrogant and narcissistic coattail-riders want to understand how the blossoming abundance, fertility, extraordinary versatility and magical genius are achieved, but they don’t… Their heart is not open, nor healed, which is why they don’t understand. The fruits of the soul are for those who live a righteous life.

Haumea seems to point out the tremendous innovation used to create or reshape the world, just like Eris and Sedna.

The Kuiper Belt discoveries coincided with great advancements in quantum physics, with its theories of the building blocks of matter, and the search for understanding the dynamics, or anatomy of creation. We are discovering that matter has no real solidity; it is made up of “weird excitations and vibrations of invisible field energy". Quantum energy has already been discussed elsewhere on this website.

Haumea is metaphysical studies grounded, and the divine in the human body realised.

Stability, Wisdom and Being Grounded

The offspring of Haumea, the traditional Hawaiians, enjoyed stability through walking barefoot on the earth’s soil. This is their profound connection to nature; their birthright. Aloha aina means the love for the land.

The feeling of being grounded evokes a sensation of being nurtured and protected. Through this practice, they were able to trust and to wander the mysterious unknown. Their instincts sharpened by being able to utilise more of their senses. In wisdom and integrity. Some Hawaiian individuals have this aura of not having a care in the world. Trusting in the rhythm of life. They are not afraid or paranoid about what is coming their way. They have fortitude and they have a long attention span, which means they are able to grasp big picture cosmic concepts easily. They understand the geometric blueprint of circles and cycles in creation, of birth, life and death. That which is divinely proportioned and infinite. They use their natural understanding of spiritual knowledge to their benefit. Everything exists in one mystical system.

When we turn inwards and look long enough, we will find our own inner inexhaustible nourishment.

When we allow ourselves to connect deeply with what nourishes us within, we lose our fear that we will ever have to do without, or that nourishment will not be there when we need it. It causes an unshakable inner knowing, compassion and self-confidence. In this world you have to be soft to be strong. Being insightful is a powerful characteristic to have.

If you compare this very natural state of being with the children of today, we see a generation with short attention spans, glued to their screens, who are disconnected from nature and natural rhythms. Mental health problems are at an all time high, and many people are simply… lost…

With higher expression Haumea energy, there is a knowing that with being in high vibration, grounded, calm and heart centred, spiritual protection is bestowed… Haumea endures. Haumea energy is not only about the relationship between the people and the land, it also encompasses the spiritual world.

Thanks to the fact that some of the chart is grounded, there is increasing sensitivity to unseen forces… There are hidden matters, need for caution. There is reason to be suspect, for there are slippery adversaries, and an infected environment. Therefore it is important to sense for the undercurrents and the dangers afoot… Paradise have snakes…

Trickery, Schemes and Shenanigans in Relationship in a Small Community

VS

Right Relationship, Natural Law, Right Action, Integrity and Moral Compass

Mercury is strong in its natural house, the third house, and in tight conjunction with Venus, but here is an element of not taking life seriously and conversation and relationship perhaps being too shallow.

Perhaps also an element of lack of commitment, being too playful, love-bombing, being flighty, and “the joke is on you” energy. Like being a charming Peter Pan, not wanting to grow up, not take accountability, nor mature.

This is the polarity of the Sagittarius sign, being in the house of the opposite sign Gemini, which rules the 3rd house. This is significant, due the cluster of planets in it, and how they express.

In Eris and Sedna’s discovery charts the cluster configuration of Venus/Mercury/Pluto take on dark themes, depending on the orb of influence and the house they are in. In Eris’ chart the conjunction is in its natural house, the ninth house, and highlights why narcissism, clout chasing, energy vampiring and flipping the script in relation is associated with Eris. In Sedna’s chart, it is in the 11th, which involves the relation to humanitarian issues and the socially acceptable dictates of a society in relation to certain large groups in it.

When you read Martha’s book on Hawaiian mythology, there is a great sense of matriarchal RANK. Haumea is the ancestress, wife of Wakea and mother of island chiefs. This may be symbolic of the Saturn in the tenth house in Cancer, but what struck me most from Martha’s writings, is Haumea changing her form, and the trickery of ‘sleeping around’ due to her ability to transform (and perhaps abuse her position of authority), disguising herself with her already married children and grandchildren, in order to perpetuate and grow the nation.

And according to one version of the story in Martha’s book, Haumea has a daughter with husband Wakea, but he then takes the daughter called Hoʻohoku-ka-lani as wife, and she produces a son called Haloa. This is said to have angered Papa (Haumea) after catching him in the betrayal. In Brandy Nalani McDougall's book Finding Meaning: Kaona and Contemporary Hawaiian Literature there are also less credible, but critical versions of the story, making Wakea out to be the lustful evil chief who got a priest to help him sleep with his own daughter. It gave account that it resulted in a divorce between Haumea and Wakea.

It is written that Haumea transformed herself with the Makalei stick and disguised herself as a “budding young girl” when Haloa was old enough to take a wife, and then had an evil son with him called Waia. "Thereafter she continually reshapes her form by means of the stick and bears children to her sons and grandsons, until the kahuna Uaia discovers her true nature and her power collapses." We see in the book multiple examples of how shenanigans in relationship, and what is felt like a deception, betrayal or trickery (third house cluster), turns people away from their pono (right relationship) and kuleana (responsibility for self and others in the community). It can result in endings in relationships. A theme that is very present in Haumea and Sedna’s mythologies.

According to this resource, the aboriginal people of Hawaii, are descendants of Polynesians who migrated to Hawaii in two waves: the first from the Marquesas Islands, probably about AD 400; the second from Tahiti in the 9th or 10th century.

It is understandable why the first human arrivals saw themselves as nation builders on uninhabited islands, and got to it. The pride of being the matriarch is understandable.

Yet it is also understandable, that when a man and woman come together in a relationship commitment, and one party goes off to have

sex and produce offspring with another, there is bound to be human relationship complications…including jealousy, anger, vindictiveness and other evil lower vibrational emotions. Waia was the evil son that was the product of Haumea’s anger with her husband’s infidelity. This is cause and effect. Karma. The low vibrational emotions, and poor choices made out of anger and vindictiveness, produced far-reaching bad consequences. Haumea produced many children by disguising herself, but according to one version of the story; by the time Kio was born, Haumea was recognised. “Haumea was recognised as withered up. She was old, she was not desired. She was shown by Uaia to be worn out. Dried up back and front. She stamped on the ground, left Nuʻumea. The earth shook, the woman ceased living with many husbands.”

In human relationship, there is toxicity that can be generated by trickery and shenanigans; they have consequences, and can keep people stuck energetically.

Creativity and life force is affected when people either stealthily or forcefully cross the energetic boundaries of another. This is invasive. This is an unacceptable and unwanted energy exchange. Violating both the fragile, invisible threads that keep an individual in spiritual health, and delicate web of life that connects people.

Many people think that this crossing of other’s boundaries only hurt the victimised. No! It affects the perpetrator, who tries to manipulate, to bind up another’s energy, or feed off of them. By the abused walking away, protecting their heart, and transforming themselves, they become in integrity, bringing spiritual protection over their lives; justice and divine favour. Learning to stop putting themselves in bad situations with unhealed people. Unforgiveness disturbs the soul and block blessings.

What we do to others in relation, the animals and our land, affects our spiritual well being, because we are all part of the same Universal Spiritual Force; it is part of us and it exists in all things.

This same element was discussed at length in this Eris article. How the sins of the fathers (or mothers) visits the children, so it won’t be repeated here.

Immature Relation, Fake Affection and Infatuation

The entire cluster in the third house speaks of the potential for mercurial immaturity and being undeveloped emotionally. Like children in primary school, first entering puberty, and becoming interested in relationships and connections; both in the group and in exclusivity.

It speaks of the potential for illusion, jealousy and infatuation, and how the lack of reciprocation, trust or loyalty, can drive a person to paranoia, craziness, trauma and being defensive. Resulting in forceful behaviour in turn.

This masquerade, forbidden fruit, curiosity, desire, temptation, intoxication is not real love. It is forcefulness and selfishness. It is being emotionally manipulative, abusive, cunning and secretive. It is being clingy and overbearing.

Like a sweet and sour combination; they are sweet in relation (Venus) when others do what they want (Mars), and when they can’t get their way, especially when they feel rejected, they become sour (Pluto). They become emotionally unstable and easily triggered. If left to fester, they may become dark, evil, or to the extreme may take revenge, in a heartless, narcissistic manner (Sagittarius). Eventually even suffering from some kind of mental issue, or being seen as a weirdo or sicko. Being jealous of every relationship that the person/s of their obsession

has, and going crazy at the smallest of things.

Haumea lower expression people may use trickery to create illusions, pretences and confusions, to hide the emotional instability, haughtiness, forcefulness and the scheming, and if they don’t heal, they may take this insecurity into adulthood, where it gets triggered again. They may be insincere and don’t commit to healthy, reciprocal relation, to whatever or whomever that may be. They are too flighty, childlike, fickle and inconsistent (third house). And a joyless connection to in general. They need healing.

Haumea’s story has multi-layered elements of human and family evolution and symbiosis. At first, there was a basic need for the first arrivals on Hawaii to procreate, but then there was a need for individual spiritual evolution, illumination, and birthing new, grounded states of higher awareness and consciousness.

The Makalei Branch:

Potential for Benevolence Turning into Evil Magic?

In Haumea’s mythology, the Makalei stick was used to manifest a variety of supernatural events, that was beneficial for all in the nation.

When Haumea visited the chieftains daughter who was experiencing painful childbirth, during which she discovered that humans only gave birth by cutting the mother open, Haumea created a potion out of the Kani-ka-wi tree (Spondias dulcis), which allowed the mother to push out the

Image: A typical Hawaiian girl 1911, via Wikimedia Commons.

baby naturally. The edible fruit from this tree is called a Wi apple in Hawaiian, otherwise known as a golden apple or a June plum. According to another version of the story, the special medicine tree to aid in childbirth was Hibiscus tiliaceus. Haumea’s potion was very helpful to mankind, and it helped with the procreation. In gratitude, Haumea was gifted with the Makalei tree.

The Tree of Life was initially on the island of Oahu, whose mystical branches and deep roots yielded infinite amounts of food. Like a Cornucopia, the tree symbolically provided many staples to the Hawaiian people; taro, pig, freshwater fish and seafood. When the goddess shook a sacred branch of the miraculous Makalei tree over water, the action attracted abundant fish.

The stick was a magical source, to abundantly feed a growing nation, but in the negative expression, Haumea used the stick to transform herself into a young, attractive girl, misusing the energy, her position and her ability.

For what seemed like love-magic… to get another to be with her… without them having a genuine desire in the heart for the relation. With tactics, stealing someone’s free will, and forcing them to be with her, instead of them following their spirit.

Playing god in their life with her provocative behaviour, that crossed the sensitive boundaries of human relation, so to speak… It's a philosophy that sanctioned unfair practices so long as it was serving her purposes. This may have caused tides of disorientation, flashes from the subconscious, and intense emotion in those affected. There had to have been a need to guard against the influence, deception, powerful mood swings, and hysteria. To heed primordial instincts, and strange encounters. It is those planets in the third house, and how information and experiences are perceived and analysed. And for the light of reason, to control emotions.

In exploiting and desecrating the sacred, and precious energy, we see that this magical energy, used with ill intentions, resulted in enabling the practitioner to indulge in wrongdoing. With far-reaching consequences…

This is one of the lower expressions of Haumea energy.

Some giving in to low vibrational emotions, like anger, arrogance, jealousy, spite and vindictiveness. Perhaps also becoming so low vibrational, toxic, and stuck in stagnant energy, that they were more easily tempted by evil spirits or dark attachments, to make bad choices, getting those far-reaching consequences.

The ancestors of the Hawaiians are Polynesian, who had lived many generations with superstitions and evil witchcraft. Casting spells to create illusions, and exposing innocent people to the horrors of dark spirituality, black magic, spell work, charms, voodoo, sorcery or witchcraft… Warlocks and dark priestesses. Spiking another’s drink or food with magic potion, is some of the first things they learn when being initiated into the dark crafts…

It’s also easy to see how inbreeding on small Hawaiian islands would be a problem… and why everyone ended up being angry with Haumea for having intercourse with her descendants… Haumea was eventually killed by Kaulu.

A Nation’s Woundedness: Chiron’s Opposition to Saturn

As previously described, the star sign Sagittarius is the mythological Centaur and represents the choice, of the polarity between lower appetites or higher Self.

Chiron was a Centaur, yet he was nothing like them due to his woundedness. Centaurs in mythology were known for indulging in their lower animalistic nature; drinking, fighting, causing trouble, recklessly disregarding others due to their insensitivity.

Chiron knew the benefits of not giving in to the lower nature, but instead living in the higher expression of Sagittarius: wisdom, higher learning, personal growth, personal development. And he got real masterful at it. Chiron would rather be a misfit, than a brass piece of shit that is inconsiderate, indulged in reckless behaviour, chaos, lust or wild disorder.

Chiron is in Capricorn, which is Saturn’s home sign. Saturn is also in its house of domicile, the tenth house.

This same aspect is in Eris and Sedna’s chart, in the same signs. In Haumea’s chart Saturn is very strong in the 10th house of public reputation and a maternal ancestress. The stories in Martha Beckwith’s book, Hawaiian Mythology certainly echo many of the themes this carry. The pride that Haumea took as provider (Saturn) of food as nourishment (Cancer). Also her pride in genealogy, history and birth as the method to increase family stock. Her divine forms and her different bodies are worshiped by later generations as gods by different names, yet all in ode to her as creator mother.

Haumea is a maternal figure with social standing in Hawaii. Still producing abundant beauty in the wild abandon of flowers, fruit and edibles. Still venerated after all these years.

Haumea energy in the higher expression can be very Saturnian; she knows how to be a mature, responsible (kuleana), sage steward of the land and its people, and is very disciplined in achieving pono. This is illustrated in the story of how she became the Akua wahine.

Yet there is a Chiron wound in the fourth house in Capricorn. And the Chiron oppose Saturn aspect is on the bendings, squaring the Nodes of Fate...

What woundedness lies hidden in Haumea’s mythology? Related to being grounded, stability, family structure, social order, infrastructure, and standing in the world? The Hawaiian culture and history is deeply suggestive of responsibility, hierarchy in society and ‘layers’ of significance.

Another article explores how, Haumea’s partner Wakea was almost killed by an unjust ali’i called Kumuhonoa, who unfairly enforced the kapu system on wild mountain bananas, that Wakea had picked. Haumea had mana (life force) and strength, and had to pray to her ancestors for divine intervention, and use her intelligence to strategise battles against corrupt authority, who don’t take kuleana (responsibility) serious.

I was not particularly surprised to find that in Haumea’s discovery chart, the asteroid Pallas Athena, the Greek Goddess of Battle Strategy and Wisdom is prominent.

It is in her first house, conjunct the ascendant, as well as conjunct the natal Haumea. Haumea will use her wisdom, call for divine help, and defeat her enemies. Protecting who and what she cares for via benevolent supernatural force.

Chiron: Societal Systems like the Kapu regarding Nourishment

Lack, disadvantage, injustice, unfairness and insecurity around food?

The ancient Hawaiian political structure was ordered along a highly developed system of social stratification. The kapu was a set of laws governing every activity of the common folk. Higher-ranking royalty and chiefs were given more mana (life force), supernatural powers and prestige. In simple terms, the Kapu was used to keep the superior and inferior apart.

Another reason for the origin of the Kapu system, may be that the availability of food had been a limiting factor for humans throughout history. The first Hawaiian migrants who came by boat, had limited food to eat on their journey, and when they first arrived, they had to rely on what they could find, which was primary seafood, untill they could propagate what they brought with them. Many of the richer foods were forbidden to women, like pork, bananas, coconuts and certain kinds of fish. She could be put to death if caught eating it. According to Mahealani Uchiyama's book

titled The Haumana Hula Handbook for Students of Hawaiian Dance, early settlers initially moved around a lot, as it took some time before they could establish permanent settlements, around permanent sources of productive crops. Think taro patches and fish ponds. The Kapu system ensured that should there be food scarcity, the royal family get preference, then the chiefs etc. When reliable agriculture became established, they did not abolish the selfish government system restricting food intake. Why? Because the emotional insecurity and remembered cultural trauma stayed… In ancient times, men and women ate separately, and women were not allowed where the men ate. It was normal for men to cook. This is a great example of the expression of Chiron in Capricorn in the fourth house. Chiron is exactly opposed to Saturn in the 10th house, which is that strong, overpowering system of control and government putting the the lower ranks and wahine’s needs (women) last in line…

Another article, delve into the political bent of Poepoe’s published book on Haumea in 1906, and how those affected by unrighteous political power and governance, will always find a way to organise themselves, to right the wrongs to restore symbiosis.

The fourth house in astrology also relates to self-care, and with wounding around this issue, it is easy to understand why practices like creating sacred space, grounding and keeping the heart space healthy helps in this arena.

In Haumea’s discovery chart, the asteroid number 24 Themis is at 22 degrees Capricorn, and Chiron is at 25 degrees Capricorn… This cluster is in opposition to Saturn at 25 degrees Cancer, and square the bendings at 29 degrees Aries/Libra. Curious synchronicity is it not? It’s the wounding and pain about being required to keep quiet, about the sorrow and destruction caused by the establishment and institution of government (Capricorn). (Eris has the same configuration in her discovery chart. Learn more about Themis here.)

The zodiacal essence of Capricorn is to utilise, and authoritative command (demand?). The skilful application is accomplishment, and the unskilful is opportunism.

The defintion of kuleana in Hawaiian is responsibility and accountability. When one is practicing Kuleana, the person is practicing responsibility and accountability in their daily life. In Hawaiian culture, Kuleana means to have broader sense of responsibility to themselves and their community. And it means taking responsibility and accountability for your own actions in your life. This applies to all areas of life, which is why, practicing Kuleana is a great skill to have.

Chiron in Capricorn in the Fourth House:

Tsunamis? Volcanic Activity? Food Crises? Infrastructure Destruction?

Both of these issues are currently news headlines all over the world. We’ve recently experienced the Tonga volcanic eruption, that resulted in a Tsunami that travelled great distance to wreak havoc on distant shores. And due to CoVid-19, we are having problems with the supply chain, and some grocery store shelves are not being replenished with the usual speed and efficiency.

Mike Brown and his team had discovered Haumea on 28 December 2004, just after Christmas.

This discovery was just two days after the Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia, which should tell astrologers something…

Haumea and Sedna has similar themes regarding tsunami. But Haumea has a tidal wave in her story.

In this, we can glean some understanding of the Chiron wound. When volcanic activity or tsunamis hit, volcanic ash, liquid lava, or walls of water destroy everything in its path, including the food, shelter, family and nourishment. All islands around the world were created by volcanic activity, but many of those islands are still sitting on a ticking time bomb today…

Chiron in the fourth house rules home, family, domesticity, our deepest emotional core, our roots, foundation, genetic inheritance or origin, history, tradition, customs and our relationship with a maternal figure.

Chiron is also in Capricorn, which rules the structures of our lives. Which may be obliterated at such times, as the grim reapers (Saturn) move in and create restrictions and harsh conditions.

Food requires established infrastructure to grow, and take time to ripen, before it can be harvested. If the cultivated lands and wild forests are destroyed… a potentially multifaceted, painful crises it would be… History shows these disasters have happened many times, and the survivors had to learn to grieve, forgive, heal and pick up the pieces of their lives, to more forward.

The most destructive tsunami in modern history hit Hilo, Hawaii on 23 May 1960.

A 10 metre high tsunami killed 61 people, and caused very costly infrastructure destruction. It was caused by a massive 9.5 magnitude quake that killed thousands in Chile the previous day. The event chart shows Uranus at 17 degrees Aries inconjunct Saturn at 17 degrees Capricorn, as well as Eris conjunct Mars at 9/10 Aries. Chiron at 2 degrees Pisces was opposed to Pluto at 3 degrees Virgo. There was also a Yod at play with Neptune at 7 degrees Scorpio at the apex. Astrological triggers for tsunamis were described in an earlier Sedna article.

Image: Active Pāhoehoe lava flow from Kīlauea near Kalapana south of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park via Wikimedia Commons.

Kīlauea is a volcano on the Big island. Kaʻū Desert is the barren area south of it.

It is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaiʻi. Its eruptive history has been a long and active one; the name means "spewing" or "much spreading" in the Hawaiian language, referring to its frequent outpouring of lava. Kīlauea's high state of activity has a major impact on its mountainside ecology where plant growth is often interrupted by fresh tephra and drifting volcanic sulfur dioxide, producing acid rains. This fiery hearth of goddess Pele (who is one of Haumea's children) and goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes, is a stark reminder of the potentials...

Yet, at the same time, Haumea is also the feminine principle or Creator Goddess who creates the land of the islands of Hawaii.

The eight islands are all volcanoes that run along a fault line; some of which still erupt. When they do the lava spews out, then cools and adds to the landmass. The firepit of destruction within the volcano is Haumea in her Fire goddess form called Pele, who is at the same time, in creation mode. Adding much sought after landmass for small islands, with growing populations. What irony?

According to Martha Beckwith, the old Hawaiians watched the process of land being formed from volcanoes and it provided them with a wonderful metaphor or model for understanding how the Earth was created. They equated the fire with Spirit, which is exactly right in spiritual terms, and saw that Earth is formed out of Fire. The old Islanders said that the Islands rose up as the body of Spirit. They were the material form of spiritual force and this means that land has an animate nature. The destructive and regenerative forces are what gives life to Hawaiian islands, in more ways than one…

Haumea activations in the astrological chart implores you to let go of whatever you have haunted you, and forgive those who have hurt you.

Based on the understanding above regarding Chiron, the relationship between the people and the land, also encompassing the spiritual world, is easily understood. The book Mo’olelo o Haumea by Joseph Mokuohai Poepoe in 1906 also describes the metaphorical way to express the deep connections felt between people, the land, the plants and other life forms, and the spiritual world well. This love and care was expressed as ‘aloha ‘āina’ (love for the land). The land is deity and the land is beloved family; people feed the land and the land feeds the people; the landscape itself, even rocks (or especially rocks) are part of the living world and are beloved.

It is ironic it was ultimately a tidal wave and the final defeat of her enemy (Kumuhonua) that enabled Haumea to start an entire new genealogical line. To start an entire nation from the foundation up.

Moʻolelo are the narrative stories of the Native Hawaiian people. These fiction and nonfiction narratives were exclusively oral at first, but began to be disseminated through writing in the 1800s after the development of the written Hawaiian language.

Feasts, Traditions, Holidays, Food Festivals and Values

According to this website, the traditional staple foods of the Hawaiians were taro and poi, breadfruit, sweet potato, bananas, taro tops and some other leafy vegetables, limu (seaweed), fish and other sea foods, chicken, pig and dog. Taro, a starchy food, is a good source of vitamins A and B, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. It leaves an alkaline residue in the body (and is easily digested by the gut bacteria in the human stomach). Fruit was lacking in old Hawaii except for bananas, coconuts, and mountain apples. The Hawaiians were dependent on what the islands and ocean produced. They were splendid physical specimens, so their diet must have been a very adequate one nutritionally.

The lack of access to these foods may have been painful indeed (Chiron) but fortunately the people had great physical strength, fortitude and heart.

”The early Hawaiians had many feast days, not just for socializing and good times but to follow some religious celebration. There were feasts to celebrate the birth of a child, his weaning, his marriage, and his death. A feast also consecrated a completed piece of work, a canoe, a house, or whatever fruit of labor being dedicated. This custom is still followed today by many Islanders of all races in the dedication ceremonies of a new business, building, or enterprise. Holidays, as we know them, were also celebrated in ancient Hawaii. The most noted was the makahiki or Hawaiian thanksgiving. It lasted four consecutive months, October or November through February or March. It represented a religious ceremony to the God Lana. During the makahiki, the people stopped work. There were no wars, and offerings were made to the King. Then, the people gave themselves over to sports, feasting, dancing, and having a good time. At the end of the makahiki, the King proved himself a fit and able ruler. He would go off shore in a canoe, and when he again stepped on shore, he met and defended himself against a group of men who rushed him with spears!”

Today Hawaiians still have many festive experiences to celebrate their values. The first feast in Hawaii resembling a modern-day luau was probably held in 1819.
