Sedna, Uranus and the Astrological Triggers of Tsunamis
The word “tsunami” comes from two Japanese words, “tsu” meaning harbor and “nami” meaning wave.
Tsunami's can be generated by any significant displacement of water, but are most commonly generated by the movement of tectonic plates under the ocean floor, during an earthquake. They can also be caused by volcanic eruptions, meteorite impacts, glacial carving or landslides.
Prediction in astrology is not an exact science. And some things, like a tsunami, are completely unpredictable. Even though it is challenging to predict earthquake or volcanic activity with astrology, some triggers seem to work time after time… in hindsight… when considering A BIGGER PICTURE. Some are highly associated, and some just seem to add to an already stressful situation, being triggers for release.
Uranus is the planet of the unexpected, shake-up, change and surprise.
In both the recent Tonga event, and the well-known Boxing day event, Uranus had stationed within a few days of both the events. Volcanic activity, as well as earthquakes in astrology are typically associated with planet Uranus. These, along with tectonic plates, tend to build pressure slowly and steadily, until it reaches a stressful peak.
Tsunami’s however, have been associated with dwarf planets Sedna and Haumea, but anything highly stressful, and combinations, can be activators, or triggers; like aspects with the Nodes of Fate, or a significant inconjunct aspect between outer planets. Uranus/Mars and Uranus/Jupiter aspects are also known indicators of high volatility associated with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Even Eris aspects seem to be a potential trigger…
Sedna’s mythology has large waves in it which threatened to kill both her and her father travelling in a kayak.
Haumea’s mythology has a tidal wave in it that destroyed an island population…
Haumea was discovered 28 December 2004, which happen to be 2 days after the Boxing Day tsunami 2004 event in Indonesia.
Haumea was in the anarectic/crisis degree of 29 Libra when the Tonga disaster happened, making aspects with Sedna and the North Node. Astrologer Pam Gregory is of the opinion that volcanic eruptions tend to happen when Uranus are in fixed signs. It is currently in Taurus, a fixed earth sign. There is no exact science, only potentials.

The following is basically a look at the astrological trends that emerge, when the dates and planetary placements and aspects are studied. Please be aware that this article is for the more advanced astrology student.
As the last edits of this article were being made, the first international aid was arriving in Tonga, after the islands have had communications (Mercury) severed (Pluto) from the rest of the world, for days. Sedna relates to great, unspeakable loss and sudden brutal disaster for a person, or in a community’s life. The Tongans are likely experiencing visceral trauma, as people desperately try to connect to loved ones (Venus). This natural disaster pertains to the loss of lives, homes, livelihoods, natural ecosystem and food production. Drinking water is one of the most basic, urgent needs. Fortunately, there are multiple humanitarian efforts in action to provide and assist. We know that many governments and government agencies are providing relief, and fortunately there are also humanitarian organisations (11th house) who are experienced in mobilising and providing compassionate aid. This unfortunate disaster is visible in Sedna’s discovery chart with the Yod apex on Saturn, but also with the conjunction of Venus/Mercury/Pluto in Sagittarius in the 11th house. The same cluster of three planets started a dance in a different sign (Capricorn) at the end of December 2021, to continue until March 2022. Venus went into the underworld, while conjunct to the Lord of the Underworld Pluto. Mercury is also in retrograde. Sedna is also currently conjunct the Pleiades/Weeping Sisters, and have moved into crisis degree 29 Taurus and will be for several years. Tonga Tsunami - 14 January 2022
Cause: Volcanic Eruption
A tsunami was triggered after a very large volcanic eruption on 14 January 2022, on Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai, an uninhabited volcanic island in the South Pacific Ocean.
According to Wikipedia, at least three people were killed and many remain missing in Tonga from tsunami waves up to 15 m (49 ft) high. Two people drowned in Peru when a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) wave struck the coast.
As a result, a 1.2m tsunami struck the Tongan capital Nukuʻalofa.
Destructive tsunami waves of 1–2.5 m were observed in several islands in Vanuatu.
In Kominato, Amami, Kagoshima, Japan, a 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) tsunami was reported.
In Peru, two people were killed in Lambayeque, where the tsunami measured 2 metres.
The volcanic eruption made several explosive sounds of thunder and sent a huge plume of ash into the air that was visible from outer space, which rained down in dark grey small stones and ash on Tonga residents. A tropical paradise no more…

This volcanic eruption happened 5 days before Uranus went direct on the 19th of January 2022.
Uranus square Mars:
Uranus at 3 degrees Taurus squared Saturn at 13 degrees Aquarius.
Sedna:
Sedna was at 28 degrees Taurus conjunct within a two degree orb to the North Node at 0 degree Gemini.
Sedna at 28 degrees Taurus conjunct malefic fixed star Algol at 26 degrees Taurus.
Sedna trine to Pluto at 26 degrees Capricorn and squares Jupiter at 3 degrees Pisces.
Sedna and North Node inconjunct Haumea at 29 degrees Libra.
Haumea:
Haumea is at the critical/ anarectic degree at 29 degree Libra.
Haumea inconjunct the North Node and Sedna, squares Pluto, and trines Jupiter.
Eris:
Eris went direct on the 11th of January, a mere four days before the event at 24 degrees Aries still within a two degree of influence orb with Pluto.
Boxing Day 2004 Tsunami Indonesia - 26 December 2004
Cause: Earthquake
According to Wikipedia, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami (also known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community), the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake occurred on 26 December, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
A series of massive tsunami waves grew up to 30 m (100 ft) high once heading inland, after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore. Communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean were devastated.
The tsunamis triggered killed an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.
The tsunami devastated the coastline of Aceh province, about 20 minutes after the earthquake, with waves ranging from 3 - 30m. Banda Aceh, the closest major city, suffered severe casualties.
The island country of Sri Lanka, located about 1,700 km (1,100 mi) from Sumatra, was struck by the tsunami around 2 hours after the earthquake, and waves ranged from 4 - 10 m.
The tsunami travelled eastward through the Andaman Sea and hit the south-western coasts of Thailand, about 2 hours after the earthquake, with waves ranging from 2 - 19.6m.
The tsunami reached the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu along the southeastern coastline of the Indian mainland about 2 hours after the earthquake, with waves from 2.2m - 5m.

Uranus Direct:
Uranus had just stationed direct one day before the earthquake struck, that would cause the tsunami.
Uranus square Mars:
Uranus was at 3 degrees Pisces and making a square to Mars at 0 degree Scorpio.
Sedna:
Sedna was at 18 degrees Taurus in semi-sextile Eris at 19 degrees Aries within a two degree orb.
Sedna had just went retrograde two weeks prior.
Sedna was inconjunct Haumea at 12 degrees Libra.
Eris stationed to go direct 15 days later.
Haumea:
Haumea at 12 degrees Libra was conjunct Jupiter at 16 degrees Libra
Haumea/Jupiter trined Neptune at 13 degrees Aquarius
Nodes of Fate:
Chiron at 25 degrees Capricorn was squaring Saturn at 25 degrees Cancer, (at the bendings) squaring the Nodes of Fate with a 5 degree orb.
The North Node along with the transiting Moon at 28 Gemini, was making a Yod aspect with Mars at 0 degrees Scorpio at the apex.
Others:
Chiron at 25 degrees Capricorn was squaring Saturn at 25 degrees Cancer, (at the bendings) squaring the Nodes of Fate with a 5 degree orb.
Saturn was inconjunct Pluto within a 3 degree orb.
On the day, there were also two Yod aspects that were vaguely within close orb, with the following planets at the apex: Mars, Moon. This event chart, also has many striking similarities with Sedna’s discovery chart of 13 November 2003, just a year earlier.
Fast moving triggers: Mercury at 10 Aquarius squared Uranus at 10 Taurus in a tight orb.
Tsunami’s have different classifications but according to this article, scientists rank them according to how much damage their wreak, which may take years to estimate. Some Tsunami’s are smaller than the major ones listed below, but they do profound damage to people, infrastructure and economy. It is completely unpredictable. Samoa Island and American Samoa on Sep 29, 2009
A powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Samoa triggered Tsunami waves that hit mostly the Pacific island nation of Samoa and American Samoa. At least 184 people were killed on the islands.

The Messina Earthquake and Tsunami in 1908
Southern Italy suffered devastation in the early morning of December 28, 1908. The 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami almost completely destroyed Messina and several coastal towns in both Italy and Sicily. This disaster claimed at least 80,000 lives and forced thousands more to flee.

The Valdiva Earthquake and Tsunami in 1960
The most powerful earthquake in recorded history occurred on May 22, 1960, off the southern coast of Chile. The 9.5-magnitude earthquake arrived with a Pacific-wide tsunami with waves as high as 80 feet. The earthquake and tsunami claimed 1,655 lives, injured 3,000 and left two million homeless in Chile. The tsunami swept across the ocean, resulting in millions of dollars in damages in Hawaii and killing people in Japan and the Philippines. This disaster is significant because it was the largest earthquake ever recorded and caused the first global tsunami. This tsunami left no corner of the Pacific Ocean untouched, leaving devastation in its wake and making it one of the five worst tsunamis in modern history.

The Tohoku Earthquake, Tsunami and Fukushima Meltdown in 2011
This one caused the Fukushima meltdown. This is one of the worst disasters in Japanese history, with the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region in Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0 and a series of waves followed, reaching as high as 132 feet. This disaster claimed over 15,500 lives and left more than 450,000 people homeless. The damages to infrastructure from this event were far greater than any other tsunami in modern history. The tsunami also resulted in a level seven nuclear meltdown and release of radioactive materials at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The astrological exploration is in the next list.
The Sundra Strait Tsunami in 2018
The Sundra Strait Tsunami occurred on December 23, 2018. This is the third major tsunami to originate in this area, the first being in 1883 and the second in 2004. This tsunami came with no warning even though the area previously endured two of the worst tsunamis in modern history. At least 373 people died.

11 March 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami Even Chart
According to this website, this tsunami started from a 9.0 magnitude earthquake with waves travelling 800km per hour with 10m high waves swept over the east coast of Japan, killing more than 18,000 people. Astrologically speaking,
Uranus was at 29 degree Pisces. This is the anarectic or crisis degree, and moving into Aries for the first time. And with it being so close to moving into the next sign, a fire sign, is a volatile signature. Astrologer Pam Gregory discussed this in this video.
Uranus is also square the North Node of Fate at 28 degrees Sagittarius.
Sedna was at 21 Taurus and Eris at 21 Aries making a semi-sextile, again.
Fast Moving triggers: the Moon was inconjunct the North Node and Mercury was conjunct Uranus.
Krakatau, Indonesia - 27 August 1883
This tsunami is linked to the explosion of the Krakatau caldera volcano. Multiple waves as high as 37 m were propagated by the violent eruptions. This event killed around 40,000 people in total.
Uranus at 22 Virgo was making an exact trine to Neptune at 21 Taurus, which happened to go retrograde that same day.
Sedna was at 4 degrees Aries, exactly inconjunct the North Node at 4 degrees Scorpio.
Eris was at 16 Pisces, making a wide opposition to Uranus.
Fast Moving Triggers: Mercury conjuncted Uranus at 26 Virgo.
Lisbon, Portugal - 1 November 1755
According to this website, A magnitude 8.5 earthquake caused a series of three huge waves to strike various towns along the west coast of Portugal and southern Spain, up to 30 m high, in some places. The earthquake and ensuing tsunami killed 60,000 people in the Portugal, Morocco and Spain.
Uranus was at 11 Pisces conjunct Sedna at 12 Pisces.
The North Node was opposed to Uranus/Sedna at 17 Virgo and Pluto squared (at the bendings) at 14 degrees Sagittarius.
Mars was trine Uranus at 16 degrees Cancer.
Ceres was at 13 degrees Virgo and Haumea at 12 degrees Scorpio., and MakeMake at 12 Scorpio. Neptune was at 10 degrees Leo. What a lineup!
Sanriku, Japan – 15 June 1896
According to this website, this tsunami propagated after an estimated magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred off the coast of Sanriku, Japan. The tsunami was reported at Shirahama to have reached a height of 38.2 m, causing damage to more than 11,000 homes and killing some 22,000 people.

Northern Chile – 13 August 1868
According to this website, this tsunami event was caused by a series of two significant earthquakes, estimated at a magnitude of 8.5, off the coast of Arica, Peru (now Chile). The ensuing waves affected the entire Pacific Rim, with waves reported to be up to 21 m high, which lasted a few days. The Arica tsunami was registered by six tide gauges, as far off as Sydney, Australia. A total of 25,000 deaths were caused.
Uranus was at 15 degrees Cancer square Jupiter at 14 degrees Aries
Both Mars (29 Gemini) and Saturn (29 Scorpio) were in the crisis degree/anarectic degree of 29, and inconjunct. Chiron was at 29 degrees Pisces.
Ryuku Islands, Japan – 24 April 1771
According to this website, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake is believed to have caused a tsunami that damaged a large number of islands in the region; however, the most serious damage was restricted to Ishigaki and Miyako Islands. It is commonly cited that the waves that struck Ishigaki Island was 85.4 m high, but it appears this is due to a confusion of the original Japanese measurements, and is more accurately estimated to have been around 11 to 15 m high. The tsunami killed nearly 12,000 people in total.

Nankaido, Japan – 28 October 1707
According to this website, a magnitude 8.4 earthquake is estimated to have caused sea waves as high as 25 m to hammer into the Pacific coasts of Kyushyu, Shikoku and Honshin. Osaka was also damaged. A total of nearly 30,000 buildings were damaged in the affected regions and about 30,000 people were killed.

Ise Bay, Japan – 18 January 1586
According to this website, the earthquake that caused the Ise Bay tsunami is best estimated as being of magnitude 8.2. The waves rose to a height of 6m, causing damage to a number of towns. The Ise Bay tsunamis caused more than 8000 deaths and a large amount damage.

Tsunami as a Dangerous Curiosity to Tourists
This video shows the five signs of an approaching tsunami, and it explains that one of the most obvious signs are the receding of the sea water.
Unfortunately, this is also a curiosity to tourists and those who don’t live next to the ocean, and don’t know it’s signs of danger.
The video explains that unfortunately, many people are fascinated by this phenomenon and stand on the beach to watch, which was said to be the cause of many deaths in Thailand in 2004.
Many tourists simply realised too late that they were in extreme danger; by the time the incoming wave is visible, it is usually too late to escape to safety by finding higher ground.
Yod: with Haumea at the Apex
In 2024, a highly significant Yod will start to form, and it has all the signatures for potential trouble…
Many of the outer planets will move into the 29th degree between 2021 and 2026. We are already seeing a significant increase in natural disasters. Consider the following:
Neptune in Pisces will start to sextile Sedna in Taurus, both inconjunct / quincunx to Haumea.
In April 2024, Neptune in Pisces first moves into close orb to sextile Sedna in Taurus at 29 degrees, as to influence Haumea. Tight orbs of about 2 degrees apply with Yods, although the tension this energy brings, may likely be palpable beforehand. Haumea will be at 0 degrees Scorpio. Dwarf planet Haumea is a sitting duck. She will also be vulnerable, to a square from Pluto and later the next year an inconjunct from Uranus. As well as the formation of a Boomerang Yod… This is a bus load of tension… to say the least…
Haumea will be aggravated with stressful aspects from the other slow moving outer planets for some years…

My condolences to everyone who have lost a loved one due to a tsunami or natural disaster of the like.
Astrology is not currently widely accepted in terms of considering the potential for tsunami’s, however, clearly there are patterns worth studying. May we as a species learn to understand and embrace astrological knowledge more, and heed this wisdom in the future. Our lives are fragile while living on this planet, and there are many natural disasters that threaten our lives, happiness and livelihoods.
