Chiron the Wounded Healer and Merit-Making Mentor of Youths and its Discovery Chart

This article is part 2 of the Chiron and the Merit Making of the Wise Mentor’s Discovery Chart Series, that looks at the discovery chart of Chiron the great teacher, mentor and instructor who had substance, merit and character and saw sacred beauty in youths who needed guidance. Chiron was the half man, half centaur who rose from difficult circumstances into possibly one of the most respected men of his time. This information is important, as Eris conjunct Chiron in astrology, in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and understanding the dynamics of this transit, will be important to help humanity. Find Part 1 by clicking here, which examined the Chiron wound, the rejection of Chiron as different, and the symbolism of the hydra’s venom which tormented Chiron.

Many astrologers understand the Chiron wound from an astrological point of view, since there are plenty of great articles online about it, but what about understanding the pain experienced from the symbology of the astromythological point of view?

What can be extrapolated on a deeper level from the discovery chart, than what most astrologers had been exploring before? Is there a point of view that have not been examined more deeply? It is obvious that there is way more to Chiron’s rejection and wounding than what first meets the eye... and it comes from studying the dynamics from the trans-Neptunian objects stance… in the discovery chart…

Grounded Chiron was the wisest and most just of all centaurs, serving as an instructor of the Greek heroes.

Master of the healing arts Chiron understood the benefits of wise, gentle education, encouraging reflection by looking within for self-understanding, finding stillness within, and fostering personal growth in his students, for their authentic qualities to be discovered and brought forward, and a healthy lifestyle to be embraced.

Respectable, graceful, refined and admirable Chiron shone in the social standing of fair education in the public eye as an upstanding role model, as parents entrusted him with their precious young child’s education, to be guided into maturity, responsible adulthood and potential for wealth or exaltation, in the Heroic age.

Remember that the Iliad was written some 2800 years ago attributed to Greek poet Homer, and Greek mythology is known as the bedrock of modern civilisation.

Eris Conjunct Chiron 2024, 2025 and 2026

This information is important as the first Eris conjunct Chiron starts soon, followed by more hits in 2025 and 2026… see the dates below, which is a rough estimate of when the two energies move into close orb…

In Chiron’s myth, he was wounded twice: once at birth via the rejection of others, and the second time toward the end of his life when he had already gained a reputation for being a fine teacher and healer. In astrology, this represents the fact that Chiron is immortalised in the natal/birth chart in a particular position, and then at around age 50, there is a Chiron return, as asteroid, now considered minor planet Chiron had made one revolution around the zodiac, to return to the same spot that it was in, at birth. This is the sore spot and core wounding that is re-experienced, as Chiron can bring up a flood of emotions around this wound and serve as a time to release what's no longer serving, regarding self-doubt or unresolved pain, so that the floodgates can open for healing.

Note that this article was written in the lead up to the 8 April 2024 solar eclipse, which activated Eris conjunct Chiron, as eclipses tend to have a wide, up to 10 degree orb.

Exploration of Chiron the Mentor’s Discovery Chart Details:

Minor planet Chiron was discovered on 1 November 1977 at Pasadena California, and many use the time of 10am, however, Zane Stein writes on his blog, that in a letter received from astronomer Charles Kowal he stated that he had allegedly discovered this body “a little before 10”. This synchronicity is a sweet golden nugget for this astrologer, as this time of discovery reveals some highly remarkable insights into Chiron…

Chiron at 3 degrees Taurus was opposed to Varda and the Sun in Scorpio, square to Mars in Leo. This may be seen as the making of warriors of GREAT HEART during the Age of Heroes, where men fought wars with a set of weapons, but it was done under strict codes of moral conduct, which if dishonoured, was highly dishonourable indeed. The men of the Age of Heroes fought for the acquisition of great wealth, but also for the qualities of the 8th house, which include great inner strength and fortitude.

  • Sun at 9 degrees Scorpio

The Sun at 9 degrees Scorpio is part of an interesting cluster with trans-Neptunian objects Quaoar, Ixion and Uranus. Varda is the profound carrier of LIGHT and DIVINITY, bringing hope to those in darkness, and conjunct the happiness of the Sun in the 10th house is profound MERIT, warmth and honour, and emotional honesty (Scorpio) in the public eye on its own, however…

This may be viewed as the shocking betrayal in one’s sensitivity, and emotional vulnerability, of being first rejected in the public at birth by parents who were appalled by Chiron’s looks, then more public rejection from the immature centaurs because Chiron had nothing in common with them as a whole other than similarities in a fully equine lower body physical appearance. Then the shocking betrayal of being wounded by an arrow, that would cause immense physical pain, that could not be alchemised due to Chiron’s immortality (everyone else died from the hydra’s poison). Quaoar is the bread crumb trail to eventually find the enlightenment to alchemise the situation, which Chiron did find first in the satisfaction of teaching youths skills, wisdom and the finer elements of merit-making, and later when he voluntarily gave up his immortality to be released from his pain.

  • Yod apex on Uranus and Ixion in Scorpio

There is a Yod apex on Uranus and Ixion in Scorpio, from Eris in Aries sextile Varuna in Gemini. This powerful directional focus of energies makes the Uranus/Ixion conjunction particularly pronounced in Chiron energy, in the form of shocking immaturity and brutal betrayals in society (11th house), as was described in greater detail in Part 1. Eris in single-minded Aries and Varuna in two-minded Gemini are two very opposing energies in nature, and bearing down on Uranus/Ixion, the result is bound to be nothing but very surprising and selfish in the 11th house of community or issues that affect a large group of people…

  • Moon in Cancer, Venus in Libra in Domicile and Mars in Leo in Exaltation

The Moon in Cancer and Venus in Libra is in the zodiac signs of their domicile, and Mars in Leo is in its exaltation. These are signs of being more in integrity, ENERGETIC HONESTY and at home with the particular energies. It entails growing up into emotional mastery, refined taste and mastery of the healthy employment of the senses, to live a balanced life.

  • Moon in Cancer conjunct Sirius

The Moon is conjunct kingly fixed star Sirius, and squares the Nodes of Fate and Eris. Luminous and regal Chiron was a master teacher skilled at EMOTIONAL MASTERY, and kingly leader in his own right and domain, as is also witnessed from the North Node of Fate in the 10th house conjunct MC, which squares Moon/Sirius. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, where Jupiter is the brightest planet. Sirius is in the constellation Canis Major known as the dog star, as is indicated by the red pointer in the image below. This very bright star is easy to find when considering the constellation of Orion, and the pointing of Orion’s belt. Click to enlarge. It is interesting to note that Chiron in his discovery chart is opposed to LUMINARY SUN and the Moon conjunct LUMINARY Sirius and brightest star Jupiter. The Sun cluster and Moon cluster is also in trine aspect; this is very important, as it shows what a truely magnificent and magnanimous man Chiron really was, that would have earned him being immortalised as the BRIGHTEST CONSTELLATION in the night sky, Centaurus.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky with its name meaning ‘glowing’ or ‘scorching’.

In ancient Greece Sirius as the morning star heralded the hot and dry summer, and with that the suffering of heat and fever hot weather. Many ancient cultures associated it with, or called it the dog star; it’s also seen as one of the dogs in the constellation of Orion. The story of Achilles in the Iliad is a great example of how Sirius is involved and how it is connected to Eris in astrology, in Eris’ discovery chart.

Sirius also portent GOOD FORTUNE and seem to be a signature in the charts of some CELEBRITIES, and it is one of the Behenian fixed stars of ancient times. In astrology it is seen as the bringer of HONOUR, RENOWN, WEALTH, FAITHFULNESS, DEVOTION, PASSION etc. Also, reputation, high achievements, and fame. It makes for INSPIRATIONAL LEADERS and those of SPIRITUAL STRENGTH, but if this is abused in selfish pursuits, a great fall from grace follows. Sirius is synonymous with the resentment, embarrassment and misfortunes of kings and leaders gone awry.

  • Venus conjunct Asteroid Hera, Pluto, Vesta, North Node and MC

Part 1 had a detailed description around the significance of asteroid Hera in the 10th house of public acclaim and standing. Here we want to look at how Venus in Libra, which is our sense of worth, value, fairness etc. can turn into a sense of WORTHLESSNESS when criticised by someone who counts themselves superior (asteroid Hera), and how that can be transformed (Pluto) when in a sacred space (Vesta), to be able to turn a sore spot weakness, into a positive in the public eye (North Node destiny and public acclaim). Worthlessness can be described as a feeling of desperation and hopelessness. Individuals who feel worthless may feel insignificant, useless, or believe they have nothing valuable to offer the world. Worthlessness is a feeling that may cause an individual to feel as if they have no significance or purpose, can have a significant negative effect on emotional health. The Chiron wound is all about one party who considers themselves superior, and bullies another to make them small, when a persons sees and knows their value, and that the bully is experiencing SUPERIORITY god-complex. Ruthless and tyrannical Hera didn’t want others to receive blessings within the family, as is particularly evident in her interaction with Hercules, who was her husband Zeus’ illegitimate child; she deemed that only her children born within wedlock were worthy of blessings from their father.

  • Eris conjunct South Node

Eris is conjunct the South Node, and in astrology, an object conjunct the South Node take on the negative qualities of the placements there, like mania and spiritual/mental/emotional imbalance. From a certain point of view, this is the DISHONOURABLE win at all cost battles that those like Chiron and even Achilles had in life, from others in relation who wanted to be superior, or just plain stupid, to make people of pure heart feel inferior, to have their foot on their neck out of jealousy perhaps. Eris conjunct South Node, square Moon conjunct kingly fixed star Sirius, may be seen as the chaotic ‘silent’ battle that Zeus fought against both Eris and Chiron’s student Achilles out of spite, to be superior to them, to squash the competition and be the only one perceived to be shining and admired on a pedestal. Eris can also represent the petty centaurs who came from Ixion’s linage, with most centaurs known to be brutal, violent creatures known for their drunkenness and lawless behaviour. It’s wanting rewards without effort, stealing it, taking it and indulging in it. It’s the intention to cause harm.

Eris is a conflict-full social dynamic: it’s about the games regarding who knows who, who is like-minded, loved or committed to who, or how much resources or appearances of privilege do they have? Eris is the competitive behaviour of the antagonist, who thinks that others have to be down and out, for them to be upright, and the only one left standing. Selfish. Unrefined. Corrupt and unjust.

It’s ostentatious obsession with trying to block someone’s light and success, making their environment unsafe with criticism turned into gang stalking. It’s about taking away their quality of being reasonable, acceptable and respectable. It’s pronouncing the innocent to be guilty or wrong, sentencing them to punishment; condemned to wear the unfavourable judgement, as if the prejudice is deserved…

Eris in astrology is about BIASED SOCIAL STANDING, being either unworthy of it in the lower expression, or worthy of it in the higher expression. The fact that Eris in tight conjunction with the IC and South Node, directly opposes the North Node conjunct Pluto, asteroid Hera, Vesta and Venus, speaks of a great tug of war for CLARITY between the MERIT-MAKER and the MERIT-FAKER. It’s being unsure of who is deserving of merit/clout, because it is all based on the perception and values in the eye of the beholder, and those they socially influence to take their side. This is why enviers - who want to appear superior - often look down on those who are emotionally vulnerable, honest and truthful, to make good people of substance feel small, inconsequential and sabotaged. They don’t want beautiful and sweet individuals to live a good life and get the deserved rewards for their efforts. They don’t want the hardworking and diligent natural planners and implementers to reach their goal of securing their future vocation. They feel despair when these people are respected, loved or seen for who they truely are; TREASURES, perhaps getting notoriety, alliance, assistance or position as a result of being authentic self.

It’s called BULLYING, BRIBING or COERCIVE CONTROL.

It’s trying to create illusions, so that some aspiring nobody, or someone with position pushing their justification, who is desperate to become somebody larger than life, can get achievement, without doing the INNER WORK to be RESPECTED, to feed the base ego, instead of the soul.

  • Awareness, truth and authenticity aligns with the soul… it’s peace and clarity.

  • Unawareness, self-deception and fakeness aligns with the devil within… it’s chaos and confusion.

In the discovery chart, Eris is opposed to Pluto in tight orb, and this is the signature of everything PLOTTED and CORRUPTED, that had been OBFUSCATED, coming to LIGHT. It’s about the benefits that was expected to be had at other’s expense, via havoc and doing injustice, being revealed. This is the dysfunctional energy of selling people a dream, and enticing them into thinking there is going to be rewards investing or taking some kind of action, when it is a situation of romancing to gain influence for opulent lifestyle, making others entranced in a fantasy, seducing others with lustful energy, thieving for self-indulgence etc.

This hedonistic trying to destroy other people’s life for selfish gain - from their demise - is a sure, tell-tale sign that someone ostentatious doesn’t love themselves; there is no honour, nor principle there…

  • Nodal Axis with Eris conjunct South Node square the Moon

This tight orb hit on the Moon with this powerful t-square is a powerful signature of the emotional wounding of Chiron, and it also gives great insight into the very nature of Chiron’s wounding, which has already been described at length in the discovery chart articles. Eris so tightly conjunct the IC, is the ostentatious family of Chiron, and it is also a situation which affects very deeply in the most private part of the astrology chart.

  • The Boomerang Yod on Uranus/Ixion as Reaction Point

The asteroid called Typhon 42355 is at 13 degrees of Taurus, and is at the YOD APEX of Neptune in Sagittarius sextile Pluto/North Node in Libra. It’s the powerful directional energies focussed on Typhon, that finds release at the Boomerang Yod reaction point, where Ixion conjunct Uranus is at 11 degrees Scorpio… Thus the massive emphasis on shocking (Uranus) immature betrayal (Ixion) that cuts very deep emotionally (Scorpio) in the house of community and society (11th house)… Part 1 of the discovery chart articles explained that in mythology, Typhon was the serpentine monster creature that initially fought Zeus for power, and his offspring was the Learnaean hydra whose blood poisoned and tortured Chiron, via a poisoned arrow. The hydra was goddess Hera’s creature whom she nurtured to have HATE for Chiron’s student Hercules, and part 1 described how asteroid Hera is conjunct the North Node, MC, Pluto, Venus and Vesta conjunction.

In astrology, Chiron is known as the "wounded healer" and is considered to represent our deepest emotional and spiritual wounds.

It is associated with the archetype of the "healer" or "shaman" and represents our ability to transform pain and suffering into healing and growth.

  • North Node Conjunct MC 10th house Libra

The North Node of Fate is exactly conjunct the MC in the 10th house Libra, and shows the destiny of Chiron, as a great leader in fairness and harmony (Libra), seen for being able to transform himself (conjunct Pluto), and refine his character through the enjoyment of the senses and the finer things in life, like music, art, imparting knowledge and ideas about what is fair, etc. (conjunct Venus in domicile in Libra), to shine brightly in the public eye, with great public acclaim as a masterly figure (10th house Libra), despite his circumstances. In the cluster is asteroid Vesta, which indicate that he created his school to be a safe space and sacred place for youths to develop and learn, yet asteroid Hera is also there (see part 3)…

  • Saturn in the Critical Degree Leo 8th house

Saturn in 29th degree Leo in 8th house is a potent symbol of just how much effort it took for Chiron to master himself as best he could. Planets in the crisis degree, or anarectic degree, entail the completing of an important phase in life. It begs for the person to bring a conclusion, culmination or karmic completion to a certain area of life. Saturn is the ruler of the 10th house, and here it entails allowing the self to shine brightly and be immortalised as a radiant personality with a great, amassed inner wealth of fine qualities. This is a powerful placement for Saturn, that is a great contributing factor to the endurance, wit to outlast and the perseverance that is so innate in higher expression mature Chiron energy. Chiron is the overcomer like no other, allowing his own destiny to be fulfilled, immortalised as the constillation Centaurus, see the image below.

Who was Chiron the "Wisest and Justest of all the Centaurs"?

A great healer, astrologer, and respected oracle, Chiron was said to be the first among centaurs and highly revered as a teacher and tutor. He was grounded and focussed on

the right things. Steadfast Chiron didn’t drink the kool-aid from those who wore masks and were false, despite the pain and wounding their insincerity and immaturity caused him.

Chiron was the son of Cronus, yet was raised by foster father Apollo. According to Wikipedia, Chiron was notable throughout Greek mythology for his youth-nurturing nature and teaching ability.

His personal skills tend to match those of his foster father Apollo, who taught the young centaur the art of medicine, herbs, music, archery, hunting, gymnastics, and prophecy, and made him rise above the beastly nature associated with just being a centaur.

Chiron was known for his knowledge, refined taste and skill with medicine, and thus was credited with the discovery of botany and pharmacy, the science of herbs and medicine. Like satyrs, centaurs were notorious for being wild, lusty, overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, violent when intoxicated, and generally uncultured delinquents. Chiron, by contrast, was intelligent, civilized, and kind, because he was not related directly to the other centaurs due to his parentage. He was the son of the Titan Cronus and the Oceanid Philyra.

Chiron was a renowned mentor who brought up and educated some fine future heroes that would be decorated, that include, Achilles, Aistaeus, Actaeon, Asclepius, Jason, Medus and Patroclus, see the details here. Also others like Achilles’ father Peleus, Perseus, Heracles, Theseus and Phoenix.

It was a time when young men of great energy, virility and ambition needed the wise council and balanced guidance of a mentor who can nurture and educate them in just the right proportions… to bring forth their innate, authentic qualities. For their levelling up towards grand design.

Chiron’s Teachings in the Cultivation of Heroes, and the Student Teacher Relationship In Brief

Image: Chiron and Achilles c1922-1925 John Singer Sargent via Wikimedia Commons.

Here it is also important to mention, that Peleus entrusted his son Achilles to be educated by Chiron the Centaur, to learn all manner of skills, like medicine, music, archery, hunting, and prophecy.

Achilles had shortcomings, like being stubborn, short-tempered and high-strung, thus the right influence and teacher would guide the boy into responsible, honourable manhood. Having cultivated a STRONG SPIRIT TO SHINE BRIGHTLY.

Wise, patient and highly unique teacher Chiron would have shared all that he had learnt from his own inner wounding, like healing and alchemising the insecurities disadvantage, and the benefits of having a balanced, healthy ego.

Earnest Chiron’s wise education would help Achilles fulfil his own destiny, as innovative and courageous Achilles did in his career, as a warrior with a noble, faithful, compassionate heart… known through the ages as the only epic hero of the Iliad.

These are the worthy inner qualities that provide genuine PRIDE and enjoyment of a life worth living. Achilles learnt from Chiron, to be able to go within for quiet contemplation, enjoyment and refinement and wisdom that come from listening to calming music, and give wise council to others in turn, from a place of inner achievement, shining brightly as a man of fine qualities, just like his teacher.

Chiron’s goal was to be the mentor of many heroes, because he had something precious and worthy to give, and teach valuable lessons, fostering growth and wisdom in others. He made admirable men out of young boys that Greek society of the time could be proud of, helping them master their craft.

In general terms, healer is a a person or thing that heals wounds, cures illness, restores health, or otherwise makes well and whole. Chiron was certainly known for helping many brave youths find their own wholeness and integration within. But more importantly, he was an example of a man who ‘integrated’ his own wounds regarding his childhood experiences. This can be seen in the acceptance of allowing the Age of Heroes… to die… and for others to carry on his legacy, of what it means to find the healing within, because looking for it on the outside of self, leaves one without…

In modern terms, to heal is to put together the broken, fragmented or damaged parts of self so that the one can feel good again and be more resilient in the future, but it also the allowing of the soul to take the burdens of the human, for the human to be at peace.

Image: The orbit of 2060 Chiron via Wikimedia Commons.

Curiously, Chiron’s orbit intersects with the orbit of both Saturn and Uranus.

Saturn (Cronus) was Chiron’s father, and Uranus (Ouranus) was his grandfather, therefore it is an interesting synchronicity that Chiron is in the fourth house of its own discovery chart, which is about family linage… Chiron itself is in the asteroid belt, which exist between Jupiter and Saturn.

Go to part 3 to explore the very significant focus on family and linage in Chiron’s discovery chart.
